David Halberstam Killed in Car Crash

halberstam184-fix.jpgWow-- this is pretty shocking: Pulitzer Prize winning author David Halberstam was killed today in a three-car accident in Menlo Park. The accident occurred at westbound Bayfront Expressway and Willow Road near the Dumbarton Bridge and according to authorities, he was one of the passengers.

Halberstam gained fame for his coverage of the Vietnam War, especially the book "The Best and the Brightest", a book that echoes so many things about today that it's scary. In later years, he turned to sports (a lot less draining to write about), even having a column in ESPN.com.

Halberstam was a childhood friend of Ralph Nader. I met David at a DC party once - great guy!

just horrible, horrible news. it appears the driver of the vehicle that struck his car was a grad student from the uc berkeley school of journalism (as was his driver).

also, just heard michael smuin has passed. no details yet.

and which alternative paper just last week, with the temerity if not smug autopilot glibness to run the cattiest of calendar entries before the event, will at least have the even-handedness to show some respect in its pages this week?
