We heart tortillas. We heart art made in our 'hood. Naturally, we're all over the tortilla fest known as the Great Tortilla Conspiracy exhibition. It's free (!!!!) and a few steps away from our home BART stop, the beauty that is otherwise known as 24th Street. Artists use corn tortillas as a canvas, using silk-screening, digital printing and other means for thought--although maybe not hunger-- provoking art. We outright giggle when folks say they see the Virgin Mary or Elvis in their food, but issues like the rising price of tortillas, immigration and transgenic corn have us shutting up and mulling it all over, real quick like. 7 to 10 p.m., Studio 24, Galeria de la Raza, 2857 24th Street. Phone 415-826-8009.
We're showing our hippie side by admitting we're excited to see art that is 1967 style. That means it came from Jimi Hendrix, Janis Joplin, Grace Slick, Ronnie Wood, and Sebastian Kruger. Think of it as from the oldies but goodies. There's events all weekend long, with a curated tour on Friday from 7 to 9 p.m., and a special appearance by Grace Slick on Saturday from 5 to 8 p.m. Peeking at the website got us all mellow and psychedelic feeling, man. Groove thyself over to the Argonaut Hotel at 495 Jefferson Street, SF.
We must support an org that is all about sex and culture, and no, we're not talking about our beloved SFist here! The Center for Sex & Culture will have a benefit ($15-$50 bones) on Saturday at Joe's House of Happy Feet at 975 Howard between 5th and 6th. (Many of their other events such as workshops take place at Good Vibrations, with intriguing titles like "Hands-On Flogging" and "Hot & Bothered: Playing with Erotic Embarrassment." Oy!) The fun sounding bennie show features Jackie Strano and the Hail Marys, Tom Orr of Dirty Little Showtunes, Raina Bird, and beyond.
Check out this LA Times article on an artist who paints on tortillas. I hope the local stuff is this good.

Joe Bravo's work is awesome. Thank you for the links.
I'm still trying to grasp how the art lasts on a tortilla. How much time passes before the tortilla crumbles? Maybe keeping it in a shadowbox where there's no air and chemically or otherwise treating it is the trick.
