We Read The Weeklies

Before we kick things off, we should give a big shoutout to SFist Sarah L, who generously stepped in to read the weeklies for us while we were away. Thanks, SFist Sarah L! She rocked it so hard we're going to start alternating weeks for weekly-reading from here on out.

cover.jpgNow, who did SFist Sarah L pick to win last week? The Metro! Gary Singh on San Jose soccer. The FBI may start investigating local mosques for terror connections (though they of course refuse to confirm or deny). San Jose's La Raza rent showdown redux. Cover article: Hey -- Channel 104.9 is back! They call it "classic alternative" now. A mulatto, an albino, a mosquito, my libido. A tribute to Showgirls. The new prog rock. And steak galore in San Jose.

Next up, the SF Weekly: Well, look who kicks off the magazine this week! None other than our beloved former co-editor Eve, who gives an extremely diplomatic response to Sucka Free City about a fight between C.W. Nevius and Tim Goodman about mean blog comments the latter made about the former on the ChronBlogs. Also, beekeepers worry about a new disease and Chris Daly would run for a third term if it were allowed, though he does not support three terms in general. Hmm. Very Zen koan-like. Fighting over the VA's expansion. Cover article: you know, we thought the article women's sex meditation classes would be good smutty fun but we found reading it a little embarrassing. Performing kittycats! Who cares if the lowest priced ticket is $50? Guess what, SFist Ced? Meredith finally made it to Out The Door!! And a review of Rob Sheffield's book about his wife (who died at the age of 34) and their mixtapes.

After the jump: the Guardian and the East Bay Express, along with the Weekly of the Week and the updated YTD count.

Next up, the Guardian: Tim Redmond on the homeless count. Guess what? The Guardian doesn't want more condos developed on the east side of town. Shocking, we know. Cover article: Iraqi J-school student. Annalee Newitz is torn about whether to put up her personal data online. Hey, it's time for the Big Wheel race down Lombard Street again. A drag queen tries out for America's Next Top Model. Sonic Reducer gives us the scoop on the Balazo shutdown the day before the GavinWatch party. Maybe we were just hungry when we read it, but every single restaurant in the pullout "Feast" guide looks awesome! We have an SF art biennial exhibition? Good Italian food in Potrero. And Josh Wolf's horoscope: [do] not get so exuberant than you overextend yourself.

And finally, the East Bay Express. One reader's glad Will Harper's gone. Dream cartoonist gets a hilarious dream to illustrate. The latest A's campaign, which makes fun of the Giants. C'mon, easy target! The Giants retaliate with a promotion for people to redeem their green and gold Zito swag for orange and black. Cover article: scientists writing fiction about their actual research. Breaking down Alameda island into 40 separate sections for art. The new trendy food place Wood Tavern at College and Alcatraz. The sad shenanigans over an aborted swingers party in Alameda. And why the hip-hop nation should support Obama.

Weekly of the Week: We were all set to give it to the Metro for a second week in a row, but the Guardian snuck up on us -- the Balazo story, plus all the descriptions of places to get Chinese breakfasts in downtown Oakland won us over! Plus: curse you, SFist Rain, for getting us addicted to America's Next Top Model!

YTD count: SFBG: 5; SF Weekly: 4; EBX: 3; Metro: 2.5.
