Fixing a Hole Where the Rain Gets In

roxiethtr.jpgWe've been noticing lately that there seems to be not only lots of construction crews out on Valencia Street but big, huge squares of road missing. What this means is that either the roads are even more of a mess than usual (possible) or they are actually fixing Valencia Street. So, we checked out the Better Valencia Project and discovered that it's twue, it's twue-- they're repaving the streets.

Will wonders never cease?

It turns out they are fixing the streets from 15th & Valencia to 19th & Valencia. And thatt's not the end of it. The plan will include all sorts of other goodies that are being implemented on that area of Valencia. Things like widening the sidewalks to put up more trees (evergreen trees!) and outdoor furniture and public art. Left-hand turn lanes will be eliminated as will illegal loading and parking zones and bike lanes will be made wider. All told, the plan is to create a Valencia Street that emphasizes "diversity, flexibility, and 'uni-uniformity.'" There's actually a whole lot more to plan, so if you want to look through, here's a listing and you can also check out this neato powerpoint presentation about it.

"It's not going to start there"? "Bike lines"? "There's actually a whole lot more to plan, so to look through"? Is English one of your first 5 languages? Do you guys even read these posts before you hit "save"?!

I'd encourage folks to check out www.SFBetterStreets.org and come out to City Hall on Thursday at 5:15pm for the kick-off event. The City is trying to establish some standards for our street designs to help with rain run off, make the streets more pedestrian-friendly, and other stuff .... Mayor Newsom will be there to speak a little along with Supervisor Mirkarimi. Potential other Supervisors attending include Alioto-Piers, Ammiano, Dufty, and Peskin.

Where's Supervisor Daly? Aren't better streets important to our District 6 too? Hmm....

They should close Valencia street to cars between 16th and 24th, move the 26 bus to Mission, and make Valencia into a pedestrian mall with bike lanes. Nobody with a clue drives on Valencia anyway, since it's always under construction and Guerrero is much faster.

the important question is will we still be able to park in the turning lane while getting our grub on at the phoenix/ramblas/limon, our shop on at therapy, and our drink on everywhere in between? i'm not sure why we are able to do this now, but i ain't complainin'!

That center left turn lane is so dumb as there is hardly anywhere that it is legal to turn left! No wonder everyone parks there.
