There's a New Eleven in Town

As we've already explained at tedious length, the bay area's old 511 service is basically useful to nobody (aside from the military contractor who we're paying $11,000,000 to maintain it for the next four years). But good news! There is finally a phone number you can call to get all your transportation questions answered: San Francisco's new 311.

That's right -- 311 is doing the work that 511 promised but never delivered. Five-eleven still can't provide you with NextMuni info for buses, and you can't submit complaints about shoddy service; but call 311 and ask for an arrival time or a complaint form, and they'll have all the tools you need right at their fingertips. Even better, the 311 operators have lots of the other transportation data, too, and that means that there's no longer any reason to call 511. So from now on, call 311 for transit info -- not 511. Goodbye, broken useless 511! Hello, wonderful functional 311!

But wait. What do you do when a NextMuni transponder isn't working, and the next bus isn't showing up on the map? The 311 operator will probably wind up telling you, "sorry, but according to NextMuni, the next bus is in 63 minutes," even though an invisible-to-NextMuni bus will, in fact, be coming much sooner. Is there anything you can ask the 311 folks to get a better prediction? Why yes, yes there is. And we'll explain how to do it tomorrow, in our feature "What You Can Ask to get a Better Prediction."

Good to hear 311 is working. I haven't tried it yet, but then again I'm usually walking to my destinations. Would I call 311 to ask about malfunctioning street signals (like at Folsom and Main on Saturday and most of Sunday)? How about a pedestrian sign that needs adjustment (southwest corner of Folsom and Main)?

The transit info. alone is worth plugging that into my cell phone directory. Gratzi!

how much does it cost?

Called Jeff last week and asked about the cesar chavez no school bus muni question. Muni's site said to call for more info, the number transers you to 311. Jeff at 311 tried and said "hmm they are telling me to call for more info" I told him don't bother, you are the more info person! Apparently 311 is just people with internet access. (I bet google is their home page!)

So jeff was nice and said he'd call me back with more info! He told me my number correctly using caller ID. So I waited...and waited...and...Jeff...Never...Called...Back.

How much is all this costing?

I used 311 to report vagrency and they dialed the SFPD gave them my complaint information. Seems to work just fine, except it took 2 or 3 rings to get a person at 9PM on a Sunday.

I think of 311 as a proxy to city services, which I think is a good idea so far.
