We Read The Weeklies
Last week's winner, the East Bay Express. A Oakland teacher beats up a social worker and threatens her students -- and still can't be fired. Why can't you get a free weekly in San Leandro? Cover article: The agony of med students waiting to find out where they're going to be doctors. (It's done by computers.) Do you think male poets read Bitch Magazine? Goat meat on International Boulevard. Irish rockers on St. Patrick's Day. And Dan Savage on low female sex drives.
Next up, the Guardian. Okay, we confess -- we're deliberately putting them on the front page so we can brag about finally becoming their blog of the week!!!!! (Unexpectedly, there is no link to the blog of the week on the actual SFBG website.) We've wanted to be the SFBG's blog of the week for forever. A minor quibble, in that we would have linked to the original Jen Siebel article and not the follow-up one from the next day, but they said we're having "the best public discussion yet of the mayor's bad judgment." Yay, all of us! Meanwhile, Tim Redmond is still upset about the Migden-Leno race. We're taking our anti-war fervor and going to the Midwest. Whoa -- we had no idea someone fell off a 10th floor balcony in a SoMa public housing project last week. (Victim was a robber who misjudged how far it would be to jump to the next balcony over after committing the crime.) Cover article: A corporation screws up housing in Hunters Point. Cheerful indie women from Seattle doing catchy synth-pop under the name The Trucks. L.E. Leone is reintroduced to her former mother-in-law. Kimberly Chun interviews Better Luck Tomorrow great Asian-American hope director Justin Lin. And even more SFIAAFF coverage! And (who else?) Jennifer Siebel's horoscope: "Take a minute to make sure you've got a grasp on the situation you think you comprehend. From where we sit, it looks like you're either taking too much blame or not enough responsibility for your part in the drama." Wow -- that is SPOOKY.
After the jump: the SF Weekly, the Metro, the Weekly of the Week, and the YTD count!
Next, the SF Weekly: Matt Smith says they're pitting the retarded against bikers in Golden Gate Park. Ha! Will Harper actually bought and read Han Shin's Amazon book! And -- you guessed it -- it's dedicated to Gavin, who Shin says "has inspired me to use my life as a 'Beauty With A Cause.'" Extra bonus -- article is titled "Purple Prose." Cover article: something about the new coach of the Golden State Warriors and his uphill battle. Former Sassiest Boy in America Ian Svenonius is coming to town next Tuesday for a reading, and then a DJ event with K Records's Calvin Johnson. Bring back 1992! Conceptual artist in residence at Jennifer Siebel's high school alma mater. Cover: a pull-out local music guide. Wine bars. And the Bouncer meets a Republican.
And the Metro: Guess what Gary Singh's writing about again. (hint -- its initials are S and J). No one knows why there have been so many sick baby seals these days. Cover: Pull-out guide about South Bay restaurants. There were so many ads stuffed in this section that we could not actually find the promised cover article about chefs discussing food trends. Following the bottom 100 movies on IMDb. Rerelease of the groundbreaking underground comic "The New Adventures of Jesus." We'll just give you the description of this article as it was given to us online: "Rod Stewart and Eric Clapton: They're old and coming to San Jose." And Straight Dope: does salt kill plants?
Weekly of the Week: We flirted briefly with giving it to the EBX again, because we did enjoy the article about the med school match program, but then we decided we only really enjoyed it because we have friends who are doctors and we never really understood what they were talking about when they told us about this system -- and besides, we won Blog of the Week on the Guardian! Also -- c'mon, that horoscope for Jen Siebel was spooky! We totally looked up ours, just in case it's also right (it says we should start giving people the benefit of the doubt for once. We'll do it!)
YTD count: SFBG: 4, SFWeekly and EBX: 3 apiece, Metro: 1.5.
