We Read The Weeklies
Last week's winner, the East Bay Express: Hey, maybe you could let the Laotian community know, in Laotian, when your refinery blows up? Cover article (which is by the same person that wrote the Lao article -- Kara Platoni had a busy week!): People hoarding gene patents. Book section: Books about eating, and a book about how a dowser found someone's missing harp. Nontraditional BBQ in Berkeley. And the digital music industry still sucks. And that's it! Goodness, that was a thin EBX.
Next up, the SF Weekly: Okay, we have to say that even though the SF Weekly didn't win Weekly of the Week last week, we have been repeating the punchline from their review of The Number 23 all week. "Omigod!!! 23!!!!!!" We'll retroactively award the SF Weekly the prestigious "catchphrase of last week" award. Also, the SF Weekly is looking for a staff writer. Matt Smith about conservatives buying the Tour of California -- we'd love to hear what SFist Chris has to say about this. Buying crack outside the Tenderloin police station. Is the sanctimonious Bay Guardian out of compliance with California labor codes by not paying its interns? We can't wait for that class action lawsuit. It's the return of the letter punch art design on an article about a horrible ostensibly-community centered Asian-owned corporate landlord in the Loin. Hey, this sounds cool: South Asian carnatic jazz (like bebop, only older and on a different continent) this Sunday! Yikes -- that Zodiac movie is almost three hours long. No thank you. Meredith goes to a new cool-sounding tea place in Hayes Valley. And the music section: Noise pop galore! Everything's got a noise pop connection. Cover article: Greg Ashley (from Gris Gris), quiet indie rocker. Art-rapper BARR. And Savage Love calls FreeRepublic.com a tranny website.
After the jump: the Guardian, the San Jose Metro, the Weekly of the Week, and the YTD count!
The Guardian: Tim Redmond loves trains. They're also still thinking about Ruby Rippey-Tourk's sick leave. Grrrrr -- watch out, Marke B! Bear attack in the letter! (bonus: Marke B is a bearophile!) Save the How Weird Street Fair for next year (so Steven Jones can rev up for Burning Man!). DA Kamala Harris outlines her campaign strategy. Gavin Newsom isn't really in a rehab program. Annalee Newitz's avatar on Second Life is a hapa boy with blue hair. SFist Elaine (we hope you're getting paid at that internship, missy!) says to go to a Filipina-American art discussion group tonight. The Legend of Zelda on the Wii is fun. Sonic Reducer had a good time at the Who show. Phil Bronstein's guest appearance a few weeks ago) who didn't know anything about Guns N Roses (book is about black holes). A review of the White House chef's book (in the food section, not the books). Cover article: Special effects monsters in the Presidio for Bong Joon-ho the Korean filmmakers, and other rapturous discussion of Bong's oeuvre. And Alex Tourk's horoscope: "It's an awesome week to be you." Well, after running into Gavin at the beginning of his horoscope week (Wed. to Wed.), things can only get better, right?
And the Metro: Gary Singh has thoughts about events in downtown San Jose. Is this the third week in a row that we've read an article about Dianne Feinstein's family's ethical issues? (Author of piece is this week's guest on Art Bruzzone's SF/Unscripted.) Cover article: Cinequest! More Cinequest coverage than you can shake a stick at, including a piece on Mira Nair's adaptation of The Namesake, a guide to silent film music, and the woman who produced Go Fish. Moroccan food in Los Altos, empanadas in Cupertino. A review of that cool-looking book about gangs in Bollywood that we totally want to read. We're getting totally weirded out by that Christina Ricci movie where she's chained to a radiator. And the Straight Dope on why the letters of the alphabet are in the order they're in.
Weekly of the Week: We almost gave it to the Metro because of all the Cinequest coverage, but at the very end, the excellent Meredith Brody review on the new place in Hayes Valley plus the excitingly sharp-elbowed piece about the unpaid interns at the Guardian (does the Weekly not have any unpaid internships at all?) edges the SF Weekly over the top. Omigod, 23!
YTD count: Guardian and SF Weekly: 3, EBX: 2, Metro: 1.5 (we give them the .5 for coming so close to winning this week!)

Rita,
What's wrong? You totally forgot to plug Jennifer Siebel's movie "The trouble with Romance"
You know Gavin is going to the premiere right? He was also in LA with her for the Oscars on Sunday...
I don't know if he proposed again over coffee but I bet he's staying at the Fairmont too...
Minnie Driver is at Cinequest for all those potential Minne Driver stalkers out there..
yum. the "new" place in hayes valley has actually already been open for a year now. guess everyone's been too busy trashing hayes valley for being a supposedly "yuppie" 'hood to actually get out here and see all the awesome stuff we have to offer. she's right though - it's damn good and you should definitely check it out. you will be a very happy girl.
