We Read the Glossies
With Rita's blessing, we bring you a brand new column called "We Read the Glossies." It's just like "We Read the Weeklies" only with monthly glossies. Here we review the February issues of Diablo, San Francisco Magazine, San Jose Magazine, and 7x7.

Just when SFist Rain wondered what Survivor winner Yul Kwon had done for us lately, we found him on the cover of Diablo! Yul reveals he initially thought dividing the teams by race was a bad idea. We also learn that Yul's birthday was on Valentine's Day, but he didn't have a Valentine. (For real? You should have called us, Yul. You're hot.) People: San Ramon Mayor H. Abram Wilson talks about being a black man in the 'burbs. East Bay Oscar for Best Supporting Actress goes to Luenell, the Castro Valley High School alumna who played the prostitute in Borat. Watch out for Diablo's traffic jam webcam at the I-680 at Highway 24 Interchange. That totally reminds us of that dude in Smoke Signals.
Next, San Francisco Magazine: Cover article: The SF skyline in 2020. The scoop on where we might be living in the next decade – Mission Bay will be the new “urban burb,” the Transbay area is “SoMish,” and Rincon Hill just keeps getting higher. Expect a dogfight over who gets to design the 550 ft tall (but possibly higher) Transbay Tower. A (dirty?) boulevard from Second Street to the Embarcadero. SoMa East and SoMa West are getting a makeover. We can't handle any more new neighborhood names! An interview with Aaron Peskin, the man behind the new downtown. Even more Speedo pictures? Loves it! Check out our man Drew Altizer in the Contributors section. Outtakes: a shot of Drew looking for a shot, and gossip diva Leah Garchik. Work it, Leah!
After the jump: San Jose Magazine, 7x7, the first-ever Glossy of the Month, and the YTD count.

San Jose Magazine: Cover article: CBS 5’s Kate Kelly tells us 50 things we didn’t already know about her, including her first celebrity crush (Peter from the Monkees), and her favorite superhero (MacGyver!). Unfortunately, they don't ask her whether or not she likes Ken Bastida sans mustache, or how much work she's had done. In City Scene: Moneyball author Michael Lewis' new book, The Blind Side, is about football. Larry N. Gerston writes an open letter to San Jose Mayor Chuck Reed: San Jose needs BART! Reed and the City Council should take a spiritual retreat in Santa Cruz. (We're totally getting a visual of Gavin and Chris Daly singing "Kumbaya" on a retreat - get on that, Peter Ragone!) The 23 Richest people in Sillicon Valley. RSVP: David Spade at Archbishop Mitty High School's Black and Gold Gala. Do these kids even know who David Spade is?
7x7: Cover article: The First Annual Eat + Drink Awards. Best Overall/Best Service/Best Maître d': Gary Danko. Best Meal Under $15: La Taqueria. Best Place to Dine with Your Dog: The Grove. Iron Chef Cat Cora, who hosted the Eat + Drink Awards Ceremony. 7 Degrees of Separation: our homegirl, Kimberly Yen, plays the Kevin Bacon game with Pat Kuleto and the local restaurant scene. Kim links Kuleto to Gavin's hairstylist and Mario Lopez. Genius! The Natalie column: Natalie wonders if she should keep dating a guy who keeps picking up the tab if she's just not that into him. Social Studies: Artists Ball Six: Stanlee's Brain. Omg, we were totally at that party! We didn't run into Bill and Vanessa Getty, but we did see Gaviffer's make-out sesh on the dance floor.
Glossy of the Month: Full disclosure - we used to be an intern at 7x7, and we actually wrote the Neighborhoods article on North Beach. Diablo and 7x7 each put up a good fight, but nothing could overshadow SF Mag's 2020 skyline and Peskin in a Speedo. Duh.
The YTD count puts SF Mag in an early lead, but there's still time for the rest of our local glossies. Yay for glossies!
