When The Lights Go Down In The City

The BAGeL Radio 4th Birthday Party was a blast last Thursday, with great music, cupcakes and even a reunion with one of our childhood best friends who we hadn't seen since we were three and a half feet tall. We saw great sets by Birdmonster and Division Day (unfortunately we missed Two Seconds) and a good time was had by all. Despite the fact that we killed BAGeL Radio for about five full minutes during our debut radio show last week (damn DRM), for some reason Ted still wants us around and our second show airs today at 4pm. Tune if you dare!
It's the calm before the storm this week, the storm being Noise Pop which kicks off Tuesday the 27th. They just announced details of their opening night extravaganza, which involves music from Har Mar Superstar and Tapes & Tapes plus art, ice cream, t-shirts and all manner of debauchery, hosted by friend-of-SFist David Cross, nonetheless! (Emily, you know we got your back if you need us.) It's all FREE so head here to get on the guest list. Some Noise Pop shows are sold out, but you can access everything with a badge so get one while they're still available.
Now for this week's show recommendations. There are two shows we're particularly interested in this week. On Wednesday, Garrett Pierce and Birds & Batteries play at The Hemlock. All we've heard of Birds & Batteries are the two mp3s on their website, but we're loving them. Plus the Lite Brite theme of their website is pretty endearing. We tried contacting them via their MySpace for a last minute CD giveaway but there was no response as of press time. In the meantime, download "Code Orange" and "Toothache".
It's been a while since we've read about something as intriguing as the Beyond the Valley of the Dolls Prom, a psychedelic dance party and benefit for Dirt Magazine held at 12 Galaxies on Friday night. Have you seen the film? It's unbelievable. Beyond the Valley of the Dolls is a randy Russ Meyer romp about an all-girl pop trio who goes to Hollywood to make it, complete with half-clad revellers, rapid-fire editing and conversations on speed, and some of the best movie quotes we've ever heard. To top it off, it was co-written by Roger Ebert, who is a dirty bird. It's unclear whether or not they're screening the film at the event on Friday, but performers include Manhater, The Judy Experience and DJ Hot Lunch. If you go, brush up on your film quotes. You could walk into the room and yell, "This is my happening, and it freaks me out!" Or if you're a single girl, sidle up to some toothsome bystander and coo into their ear, "Come into my den, said the spider, etcetera."
