We Read The Weeklies

20-bikeheaven.jpgLast week's winner, the Bay Guardian. Tim Redmond handicaps the SF mayor's race (they're becoming disenchanted with Matt Gonzalez?). It's the all Chris Daly news section: Chris on the How Weird Street Faire, Chris on campaign finance reform, Chris and the ethics commission. Why didn't they also ask Chris for a quote on the Mission street cleaning proposal? Cover article: "Where do stolen bikes go? Can they find their way home? Back to the open arms, of a love that's waiting theeeeeeeere?" (YouTube clip of the Whitney Houston version here.) Former Examiner writer Justin Jouvenal goes on a quest to find his stolen Fuji bike -- they need to option this article for a movie, it's really good. Also -- Chris Daly's had six bikes stolen. Events listings: why not just print Chris Daly's schedule? Kimberly Chun goes to the Grammies and reports that people asked Christina Aguilera about crotch shots. Hey, our own SFist Elaine has a blurb about Ralph Nader! Too bad the Guardian didn't let her Caption Action the picture of Ralph. (We'd go with "Cannoli, anyone?") And Gavin Newsom's horoscope: "You're exhausting yourself trying to shake this monkey off your back." Team Rippey-Tourk!

Next, the East Bay Express: Dream cartoonist: Kofi Annan calls. Berkeley and Oakland cops are raking in the dough. Cover: A band promoting itself on YouTube. Mexican food in Lafayette, and Mexican food in I Like Eating (not online yet). Legally Blonde is a fantasy. The Thread Productions indie rock community. Hip-hopper from Cambridge MA with the awesome name "MC K-the-I???", and a PBS special on misogyny and homophobia in rap. And Savage Love: heartwarming hetero tales of outre/vanilla love (the same-sex tales are next week).

After the jump: the SF Weekly, the Metro, the Weekly of the Week, and the YTD count.

The SF Weekly: Angry letters demanding to know why the Weekly is writing articles about whether Pelosi had a face lift when there are real issues in the world today. Is it not possible to ask about Pelosi's face lift while also considering, say, civil war in the Sudan? This is like a parody of a Matt Smith column: "Do union members know their boss stands to benefit from turning their pension fund investment into a gambling casino?" Will Harper muses on whether or not chickens will show up to Gavin's group therapy sessions. Cover article: An A.C. Thompson filled with entertaining anecdotes about taxicab medallion holders who make up implausible stories that, no, of COURSE they haven't sold their medallions illegally to other drivers! Also, if you were wondering where almost-Chris-Daly-challenging Jordanna Thigpen ended up, she's on the Taxi Commission now. Excellent band name: This Bike Is A Pipe Bomb (link isn't online yet, but the show is next Wed.). Legally Blonde the musical was fun. Incanto is Robert Lauriston's favorite restaurant ever. And there was a raid on mix tapers!

And the Metro: One guess about what Gary Singh's essay is about today. Yes! SJSU! The tortured federal litigation against sex.com. The Fly: the conglomerate that bought the Merc News buys a Santa Cruz paper, indie radio, and a dog dies in medical experimentation. Cover article: The MySpace backlash. Documentary about the lack of affordable housing in the South Bay. A pre-Lebowski Jeff Bridges. How to encourage people to eat healthy, "Drum Beats of Asia," and the Ballet San Jose's dissonant performance.

Weekly of the Week: The Metro puts up a strong performance (the less MySpace in this world, the better, we say) -- but poor Justin Jouvenal and his fruitless quest for his Fuji bike takes it home for the Guardian a second week in a row. Now we can't get that Whitney Houston song out of our head either.

YTD count: 3 Guardian, 2 Weekly, 1 apiece for the EBX and Metro. Let's go, East/South Bay, let's go!
