Last week's winner, the SF Weekly: Those of you longing for less Newsom news, the Weekly is your place! It's an entirely Ruby Tourk-free issue (except for the first two paragraphs of Matt Smith, at which point he then changes the subject entirely to talk some more about the city golf courses). More letters about Jade-Blue Eclipse. Has Nancy Pelosi had a facelift? People upset about the increase in fees for a state medical marijuana card. Aw, is it not enough that you can buy the pot, but you gotta be cheap about it too? (yes, yes, we know, medical need -- but still!) Cover article: We don't really get it, but it's something about the son of a cook whose name we don't recognize (Narsai David?) who got arrested on a pay-phone scam involving toll-free numbers? Hm. Yay Indiefest! Yay Fauxnique! Yay sex tours at the zoo! Meredith goes to the steak place in the mall (with a friend named Ruby -- but we don't think it's Ruby Tourk) and clashes with a server. SFist Ced doesn't get to enjoy the tension, though, because he's refusing to read the review on principle. An interview with a DJ who's done a totally awesome remix of E-40's "Tell Me When To Go." And Savage Love lectures a diaper fetishist (not the astronaut lady).
Next up, the Metro: Gary Singh waxes nostalgic yet again for his halcyon days at SJSU (avant-garde band). Putting books online (not the Google project). Cover article: Koreatown, with food reviews. It all looks so good! Underwear for Valentine's Day. New 18-and-under spot in Los Gatos. And a new place on Castro Street in Mtn. View.
After the jump -- the sex issue of the Guardian (along with an SFist cameo!), the East Bay Express, the Weekly of the Week and the year to date count!
Next up, the Bay Guardian. Naked lady wearing a snake! It's gotta be the sex issue. What better way to kick that off than a discussion of the Gavin Newsom situation? Tim Redmond doesn't want to throw Gavin out now but thinks maybe this is indicative of larger problems that would require us to vote him out in November. Steven Jones was kind enough to let us know that we'd be mentioned in his article about Gavin Newsom and Peter Ragone's meltdowns -- but did NOT mention that he also had a piece where he talks about having sex on the playa for Burning Man! Yipes! Kimberly Chun seems a little down about the dating scene. We love you, Kimberly! We'll totally set you up with someone! Strip club tour where the male author gets mocked at the Nob Hill Theater. Porn director talks, accompanied by a picture of two men (possibly) going at it. In related news, the Mission Anti-Development Coalition says it is not their fault that kink.com is moving into the Armory. Annalee Newitz boycotts GoDaddy.com. Yay Fauxnique! Menus that are hard to read. And Gavin Newsom's horoscope: "Establish clear, real commitments to what you've been putting your energy into lately."
And the East Bay Express: They're still trying to find a replacement for the Bottom Feeder -- Robert Gammon gives it a whirl under the title "Full Disclosure," which has an item about an Oakland newspaper publisher illegally dumping ink into the bay, and racial discrimination at the Alameda County PD's office. Grocery stores or a 99-cent shop in West Oakland? Cover article: A satisfying story where the little guy wins! A man sued by an erstwhile real-estate self-help guru for libel ends up revealing all this dirt about the guru's criminal record and child support nonpayments. Satisfying! There's a screening of King Kong v. Godzilla at the El Cerrito Speakeasy Theater (we can't find the link on the EBX page but here's the link to the showing itself). Barbecue in downtown Oakland. Pink wine! And a new Bay Area hip-hop sneaker.
Weekly of the Week: Okay, it's disclosure time. Everything you've heard and read is true and I am deeply sorry for that. No, wait, sorry, wrong disclosure. Steven Jones kiddingly asked if we'd make the Guardian WotW this week because they'd name-checked SFist in the article. Now, the prestigious Weekly of the Week award is not for sale! However, we must reluctantly admit that even without the thrill of seeing our own name in print, the article about the man getting made fun of at the Nob Hill Theater plus the defensive anti-development folks were probably enough to put the Guardian over the top this week in and of themselves. We feel better for letting you know the circumstances of the victory, though (and we'd also highly recommend the EBX's cover article too. Satisfying!)
YTD: SF in the lead! SFBG: 2; SF Weekly: 2; everyone else, 1 apiece.
