Last week, the Washington "Moonie" Times wrote a story saying that, in effect, that Nancy Pelosi requested that the Air Force provide her flights to and from Washington whenever she actually deigns to come home to the City by the Bay. The story is potentially embarrassing to Pelosi as it plays on the caricature of her being shrewish bitch who requests military planes while our brave sons and daughters are dying to fight the war on terror even though Iraq has nothing to do with it and even Republicans wish the war would end but they're still going to stop non-binding resolutions to stop it. Or something like that. As these things tend to happen, the story got out into the Republican echo chamber and you know what happens whenever that occurs-- the press has to cover it like it's an important story. Also, so called blabber mouths in politics and cable news spout it off like it's the unbridled truth without actually investigating it.
Of course, there's much more to the story, mainly that a lot of it, if not all of it, isn't true. It is true Nancy gets to fly a plane back east but it's only because ever since 9/11, the Speaker of the House is made to fly on special air force jets for security reasons. Double that when you're talking about the first woman Speaker of the House. So now the story becomes not that she specially asked for something she's not supposed to (although Fox News hasn't gotten that memo as of this morning), the story is that she's asking for a big ass plane (the C-40) that Republican wags have labeled "Air Force Three" (because she's third in line-- get it? Get it?) so she can shuttle her staff and all those cute grandkids back and forth. That story's been denied by everyone but it hasn't stopped everyone from turning it into truth.
Now, Dennis Hastert flied flew in a small plane, the C-20 but he lived in Illinois. If Nancy were to fly that, she'd have to refuel and for obvious reasons, Nancy would like to go non-stop. Wouldn't we all. Nancy is said to have asked for the much bigger C-40, something she denies. She's claiming that she's still working it all out with the Air Force. Something she had to say in a presser she had with the press today to discuss the story, as it's a matter of national importance.
Now here's where it gets really crazy-- even the White House is rushing in to to defend Pelosi. On the other hand, people are claming that the story was leaked by the White House to the Moonie Times because the whole thing as a way to embarrass her. Ahh, crafty that White House. And if it's not the White House, then it's the Air Force and as John Murtha said, that would be stupid because Pelosi controls their funding.
Needless to say, the story was such a big deal that both CNN and ABC News felt like they had to weigh in on it. Why? Because our press sucks.

She got caught with her pants down, demanding a huge plane that will cost taxpayers $22,000 an hour (Hastert's cost $900 an hour). I don't get her quibble with stopovers -- security wouldn't seem to be an issue since the stop would be at a military base. Then again, she hasn't exactly been praising them from the rooftops, so maybe she is afraid of the military itself...haha.

Why didn't anyone complain when Bush's wife (and Bush) flew around the country campaigning in the last election on Air Force planes. Isn't there some plane the air force could offer that fly the distance but is smaller.
