Mayor Gavin Newsom: Hell-Bent for Re-election
Gavin Newsom discusses health care issues with Assembly Speaker Fabian Núñez this morning at UCSF Medical Center as Stanford MBA and actress Jennifer Siebel chats with elected officials.
Mayor Newsom toured part of the UCSF Children’s Hospital this morning during the California State Assembly’s Town Hall event hosted by Speaker Núñez. With girlfriend Jennifer at his side, he discussed plans for UCSF’s Mission Bay development over the coming years with Assembly Members, doctors, and officials.
Although nobody was around to shout questions at him asking if he intends to resign, Gavin’s actions this morning appear to suggest, despite recent events, the answer is an emphatic "no."

Why should he resign, when vapid bimbos line up on the news to say "I'd still vote for him, he's cute!" And people who apparently pay absolutely no attention to current events say "He's doing a great job!" but when you ask them to elaborate, they leave the room.

You know, I never realized it until I read in the comments here, but I think you guys are all right. Gavin's overcompensating big time in the "making sure everyone knows he's banging hot chicks" department. What better way to gain publicity for your heterosexual virility than to make sexy time with high-profile people - barely legal teens, the wife of your campaign manager, etc.

Seriously, this is a guy who places no premium on loyalty. Within one year of getting elected mayor he back-stabbed his biggest supporters. Remember, Newsom barely won the election against Board President Matt Gonzalez with the help of conservatives in the Sunset and big business.
He screwed conservatives by backing gay marriage and he screwed big business by walking the picket line in support of the hotel strike (thus extending the strike and causing a 20% reduction in hotel and convention business for 2007).
Finally, he screwed his closest friend and campaign manager by screwing his wife and pretending he was still his friend for a year and a half. (Pretty good acting, huh?)
Unfortunately, this tragedy also involves Tourk's two year old son, who in all probability will now grow up in a broken home.
Is this the kind of guy deserving of the public trust?

I hate to pile on like this, but:
a) Does Jennifer have more than one expression? "Swells", please keep a count.
b) Between the two of them, how many noses, cheeks, and teeth does that make? Does the mutual information in their DNA sequences resemble Duelling Banjos?

Paul I never thought I'd find myself AGREEING with comments such as yours and similar posts I've been reading, but, now that you mention it, yes it is quite odd for him to be bringing his girlfriend to work. I can't recall any other political figure doing this on such a regular basis, and it does make one wonder whether or not he is over-compensating for something. Do I believe he's gay, well, not really, at least it doesn't seem so. But do I have an incling that he is diligently attempting to dispell gay rumours, yes.
The other thing that's so troubling is that he's only been dating this woman for a few months, yet she is being portrayed as if they've been an item for years or like this relationship is headed down the aisle. This is all a bit too staged for my taste. In the real world 3 months is NADA. Let's be honest (as if no one has), he doesn't exactly have the greatest track record when it comes to women, so lord only knows how many women there have been before and during this relationship, and I don't doubt there will be a great many after.
I seriously hope that our mayor gets his act together, but I can't help wondering if he's only sorry because he got caught. If he's able to pull himself together and get serious about his job, then I reckon he'll once again earn respect. But what bothers me about him is there seems to be nothing natural about him, and lately he seems SO hypocritical. Everything is so staged and rehearsed that it makes me wonder if he's honestly got it in him to be straight with anyone, and that's a big issue when you are calling yourself a leader.
If he'd had something to show for being in office as long as he has, then I think much of what's been talking about would not be as big of an issue, but clearly he's been distracted and in his own world. Getting elected into office does not mean "party time pimp daddy" and I honestly wonder if he truly gets that. I reckon he'd make a bigger impression with voters if he'd stop focusing so much on having good arm candy and start getting real about the issues he claims to be so committed to.
...And Gavigula, your point is spot on. This woman never seems to change her facial expression. It's like she's literally a Mannequin he's attached to his arm for the purposes of looking more acceptable. How sad is it when it comes to this. I don't particularly find this woman attractive, but clearly her "classic" looks by American standards is exactly what he's after. Is anything this man says or feels not made of plastic?
Joe, I don't think most San Franciscans would say that he screwed them over with his support of the hotel workers or his support for gay marriage. Why do you think his approval ratings are at 77%. (although admittidly taken before the affair information was confirmed).
Gavin legalized gay marriage in Feburary 2004, and he walked the hotel picket lines in October 2004. What's he done since then? Lots of empty promises about police reform, public safety, MUNI, clean energy, etc. And then there's that sweetheart wi-fi deal for Google and Earthlink. And Ammiano's universal health care plan that Gavin's friends at the Golden Gate Restaurant Association are suing to block.
Gavin's been asleep at the wheel for awhile. Possibly since his divorce? Does he not have the passion and intensity for the job any more, or does he have a drinking problem that he's not dealing with? Gavin says he wants to earn back the public's trust, but both Gavin and Ragone refuse to answer questions about the Mayor's drinking.
