SFist Tonight
SFist Sarah L is stuck at work, so we’re taking this feature out for a drive today….
Tonight there will an interesting auction, for the Princess Project. It's a Bay Area non-profit that provides prom dresses and accessories to high school girls that could not otherwise afford them. Which sounds kind of not very important but just think about what a special night it will be for those girls who are suddenly able to have a nice dress to the prom. One could argue too, that this would make a great reality show for MTV but who cares about poor people when you can show rich, spoiled sixteen year olds. The auction will feature items from local businesses and will from 6:00 – 9:00 p.m., at Dolce in San Francisco.
As for the rest of the day's events, we got a lot of art openings going on. We love art openings as they usually involve free booze and free food. We like free booze and free food.
First up, a reception for the artist Paul Mullins and his work Is Heaven Any Sweeter. Hmmm….according to "South Park" it is if you’re Mormon but not anyone else. Mullins apparently challenges “roots by elevating seemingly simple vignettes of what he terms "sad dog" portraits, fish, and fishermen.” That will be at the Heather Marx Gallery and the exhibit will be from February 1 – March 17, 2007. The opening reception is tonight from 5:30 – 7:30 PM
Also in reception openings we have Greg "Craola" Simkins who takes "iconic childhood images, like Dr Suess characters or Charlie Brown, and placing them in a realm of fantasy and horror" to show how nightmares are made. Like Charlie Brown doesn’t give us enough nightmares as it is. That’ll be at FIFTY24SF
And finally, that Yerba Buena Center for the Arts will have another reception for Juried Annual 2007, with selections by Berin Golonu, Associate Visual Arts Curator at Yerba Buena Center for the Arts. There’s a whole bunch of artists appearing in the collection but we’ll let you read through them, as there’s too many to write here. The exhibit runs til March 11. This reception will be from 6:00 PM - 08:00 PM at the Pro Arts Gallery on 550 2nd St in Oakland
