SFist Blotter

A Stanford graduate student missing for five days was found dead in the trunk of her car in Santa Rosa, in what authorities are saying looks like a suicide. She was an PhD candidate in electrical engineering with two degrees from MIT and held several patents in the field of digital imaging. Her grieving parents only learned of her death when reporters contacted them.

Okay, after that, we're going to keep the rest of the Blotter light. There's a naked jogger in the Cupertino hills. He's middle-aged and fat, and he wears only running shoes, glasses, and a hat. Authorities warn that it's risky to jog naked around there, because of the poison oak.

And the new hot theft item? Highway guardrails. People sneak on the highway at night and sell them for the aluminum. Popular sites for theft include Highway 92 in San Mateo County, 880 at 66th Avenue, and 580 at Keller and at Highway 24. Someone stole the guardrails off the bridge right before the Caldecott Tunnel too. Well, we figure this'll keep ChronWatch busy for awhile too.

Scrappers have been stealing anything of value out of and off of buildings in Detroit (my home town) for years now. It's really a civic epidemic there, and authorities should be paying attention and putting the stomp down on this really quick before it takes off here.

Starting with the scrap yards. I wonder if they'll buy anything with no questions asked?

As far as the grad student and the police insistence that it was a suicide...how does one lock ones' self in a trunk? Seems like a lot of effort for someone who didn't bother to leave a note. I feel for her family and I hope they get the closure they need.
