For those unfamiliar with the phenomenon that is "Ghost Ride the Whip," let us get you up to speed. Ghost riding is when the driver of a car puts it in neutral or allows it to idle, and then the driver (and passengers) exit while it's still rolling and dance beside it or on the hood or the roof. It was started in the Bay Area and was coined by Mac Dre and later popularized by E-40, as part of the hyphy culture, which features ghost riding as one of the automobile tricks done in sydeshows.
Ghost riding has recently caught on nationwide, and many folks have gotten hurt and some killed doing this, including one badly injured man in San Bruno, who was featured in SFist Rita's blotter a few months back.
Some stand-out clips from the 1,000 ghost ride videos that are currently on YouTube are the one of a guy who got his car stolen while ghostin' and another guy who "goes gay."
Mistah FAB's video (featured above) is the ultimate of Ghost Ridin' and even tells you how to do it! Here are a few highlights that make this the best YouTube video ever:
- They're ghost riding a short schoolbus!
- It's set to the fabulous Gostbusters theme
- Some of the guys are "going dumb" with their feet hanging out of the "old school" bus windows (pun intended).
- The lines: Get out the way/Let Casper drive. Who's driving? Patrick Swayze.
- If you look very closely, there is in fact someone driving the bus, which kind of negates the whole ghost-riding thing. (But we feel relieved by that knowledge, nonetheless.)
Be forewarned: the comments section of this one is very ignorantly ugly and troll-ridden. (We're guessing some of those trolls are probably ghost ridin' their Cameros in a cornfield by now.)
Special thanks to Daniel Ayala and Daniel Phifer for the awesome, awesome tip!

Oh, I love this video!! My best friend and I just bust out laughing whenever we see the guy with his feet hanging out or the dude holding the stop sign. I have this song on a mix CD and I play it whenever I'm on my way to school in the morning because it makes me feel better about the day to come. I mean, who would've thought of setting a rap song to the Ghostbusters theme?!
One more thing: Does anyone know where they filmed this little gem? (What neighborhood?) I like how the taxi (presumably, it's a taxi, but I could be wrong) pulls up behind the bus and is just driving slowly behind it.
I always think the neighborhood looks like the Sunset, but I wonder if it's somewhere outside the city?
I also think the guy holding the stop sign is a great touch, along with the guys almost getting decapitated by the power lines. And yeah, that cab driver was probably pissed!
I'm pretty sure this is in Bayview. There's also a connection between Thrasher and Bayview. My neighbor told me that one of the founders of Thrasher is connected with the hardware store on Third St.
