When The Lights Go Down In The City

This week's giveaway comes from The Finches, a local duo who play endearing folk pop. The songs are refreshingly gentle and Carolyn's voice rings with a true sincerity. See them Saturday afternoon at 2pm when they play a free in-store at Amoeba, or celebrate their CD release at Cafe Du Nord on Wednesday night with The Moore Brothers, Colossal Yes and The Mantles. We're giving away a copy of their brand new CD Human Like A House to one lucky winner. (Contest ends 1/30. Winner will be notified via email.)

You may have never heard of the Danielson Famile before, but they were a powerful influence on a lot of innovative artists like Polyphonic Spree and Sufjan Stevens. Starting tonight you have a three-day window to see the excellent documentary Danielson: A Family Movie, about the strange and magnificent expressions of Daniel Smith. We had the chance to see the film a year ago at SF Indie Fest and were blown away, as you can tell by our review of it. The film fascinated, touched and educated us in a way that only the best documentaries can. At South by Southwest last March brought our dear friend Mary Guibert to see another screening and met director JL Aronson, who was also lovely in person. Read SFist Emily's awesome interview with Aronson (thanks for the shout out, JL!), watch a preview of the movie below, and see the film at the Red Vic Movie House from January 25 - 27th.

Last night we were at the kickoff party for the Rickshaw Stop's 3rd Anniversary festival with our friends Steve and DJ Ted from BAGeL Radio and were happy to wish Dan and company a happy anniversary in person. The fun continues tonight with Pop Night featuring Music For Animals, Dealership, Hello Goodbye and Dreamdate. At 330 Ritch, Popscene's got two great San Francisco bands, Minipop and Audrye Sessions.

One of our friends recently tipped us off to a new band that we're really digging called Magic Bullets. They're playing Friday night at Bottom of the Hill with Social Studies and Pants Pants Pants, which we enjoy saying out loud. Also on Friday Slim's is showing a free screening of the Nine Inch Nails DVD "Live: Beside You In Time", Heartless Bastards headline 12 Galaxies, and the third night of Rickshaw Stop's Anniversary Fest includes Gold Chains, DJs Jefrodisiac & more.

Listen to Magic Bullets

On Saturday, show your support for the SF Indie Fest at a benefit party with Triple Cobra, Tartufi and The Herms at Rickshaw Stop. Sunday night, Built for the Sea is dreamy and Neko-esque at the Make-Out Room with [the] caseworker and Liz Pappademas. On Tuesday you have a second chance to win the new EP from HIJK (formerly Hijack the Disco). Just sign up for the mailing list on their website and then head to the show at Make-Out Room to get the goods. Also on Tuesday, KFJC presents Deerhoof, Busdriver and blackblack at Great American.

Listen to Built for the Sea

On Wednesday, if you're feeling nostalgic, catch Dar Williams at Bimbo's or at Red Devil Lounge you can see Howard Jones, who we're hoping these days is much more reasonably-coiffed. "Do you feel scared? I do." Sing along with this optimistic gem and then hate us when you can't get it out of your head later:
