The Onion Announces Worst Band Names 06

kajagoogoo.jpgForget the Oscar nominations and the Super Bowl, what really matters in January is The Onion's A.V. Club choices for Worst Band Names. They have special categories for emo bands, death metal bands, bands with the word "f*ck" in them, bands with the word "funk" in them, and bands with gratuitous usage of exclamation points.

Personally, we're of the opinion that there are two types of bad band names: annoying or boring bad and so-bad-they're-good bad. It is important to note that the badness of the name is no reflection on the quality of the music. In our college days, our pick for local bad band name was Violent Anal Death, who were also quite fond of musically. Currently, we're quite taken with 7000 Dying Rats in that regard. We think Onion honoree,We Will Eat Rats to Survive are totally biting their rhyme.

SF Bay Area bands were well represented among The Onion's choices, including The Fu**ing Ocean, Wealthy Whore Entertainment, David Copperf*ck, and 16 Bitch Pile Up.

The East Bay Express' blog offers up some of its local picks that didn't make the list. The Express' choices reflect the Bay Area's propensity for names involving animals, though it fails to mention some of our favorites of the genre: F*ckwolf, which combines the "f*ck" name trend and the "wolf" name trend (e.g. Wolfmother, Wolf Eyes, special mention to L.A.'s Dead Black Wolf) Death Sentence: Panda! animal name plus exclamation point, and the true winner of the SF bad band name involving animals, So So Many White White Tigers.

Under the "Who is Supporting Mayor Newsom Now?" category, there is a strongly supportive posting ... from another multi-generation San Franciscan ... in the blog, Sam Spade's San Francisco. There will be more as the campaign gears up and moves into high speed.

I think my favorite on the Onion list is The Busiest Bankruptcy Lawyers In Minnesota.

Great post!

What about that awesome band from the '80s -- The Liquid Tongue.
