More Transit Thrills Than You Can Possibly Stand

transbaytastic.png
Even though you're probably too chicken to admit it, we know you're curious about the January 24th meeting of the SF County Transit Authority meeting (100 Van Ness Avenue, 26th Floor). They're planning to allocate ten milllllllllion dollars to some Transbay Terminal tomfoolery: that's extending Caltrain to the terminal, redeveloping the terminal's crappy neighborhood, and sprucing up the terminal so that it's the kind of place people actually go to. Most of that 10 million will pay for a year's worth of project management.

They're also planning to allocate $64,000 to Public Works for the sprucing up a few blocks of Valencia Street -- that's just design-engineering of 17th to 19th, not the actual construction. Construction will probably happen around the end of 2007 or beginning of 2008, and they're gearing up to allocate a half million for that, in addition to a grant of two and a half million that's coming from the county-wide MeTransCom.

But wait! There's more! They're also going to put about a third of a million dollars into bicycle outreach programs. The money will be spent trying to teach bicyclists to avoid doing the sort of crap that gets them run over: darting in front of trains, violating right of way, whizzing up onto the sidewalk, riding in the dark without lights. We predict that the bicyclists will welcome with open arms the suggestion that they might modify their behavior.

And finally, they're moving to accept the results of an independent audit that showed that their books were generally open and well-kept. That's good news for the SFCTA, which was accused a few years ago of lousy bookkeeping. Yay! Oh, and they're also going to report on the status the 3rd Street line -- about $30 million over budget, by their estimates. Wonder if there'll be any talk about how the platforms were built two inches higher than they were supposed to be?

Mind the gap!

The Caltrain extension isn't part of this first phase of the Terminal, unless you've got a few billion dollars you can spare? The Terminal is going to be built buy constructing a slab on top of columns driven down into the bedrock so later on when the extension does happen they can dig out the cavernous train station underneath while the Terminal is open for business.

Setting the trains aside, the terminal is going to be pretty cheap, since most the money is being raised by private development of land around it. The money raised from the 1000' Transbay Tower is where a lot of it will be coming from (plus 30% of the housing units will be affordable, below market units)

One thing though, the MTC is regional, serving (ok, maybe that's not the right word) the entire SF Bay Area.
