When The Lights Go Down In The City
Starting next Wednesday, we're wishing the Rickshaw Stop a very Happy 3rd Anniversary! In the last three years the venue has presented shows with everyone from Jonathan Richman to Silversun Pickups and has hosted all manner of wacky special events. Our favorite memory was an early show by Phosphorescent, and a pretty fun time on New Year's Eve in '05. They're celebrating their anniversary with a three day festival featuring a different style of music each night, from singer-songwriter folk to pop to clubby dance-rock-electro.
We're giving away a three day pass to all three nights of music to one lucky winner and their guest. Enter to win below. (Contest ends 1/23. Winner will be notified via email.)
This week's recommended shows:
Tonight there's something called the Plug Award City Highlight Tour at 12 Galaxies. We're not sure what the Plug Award is but some good bands are playing, including Finest Dearest, Luxxury, Love Like Fire and Sholi. At Cafe Du Nord, KALX and The Bay Bridged present an Echolocation Day Benefit. We're not sure what Echolocation Day is, but we sure like Honeycut and the Ebb and Flow and all the proceeds from the $8-15 sliding scale tickets go to World Access for the Blind.
On Friday night, Black Fiction, Citay and T.I.T.S. are at Cafe Du Nord. One of our SFist commenters told us that Citay's worth checking out, and they were right. If you're out in the East Bay, head to the Uptown to see HIJK (formerly Hijack the Disco) with Tartufi and Cloud Archive. HIJK has a new limited-edition 5-song EP and they're giving away free copies to any fan that signs up to the mailing list on their website and comes to the Oakland show. You'll also have a second chance to win the EP at a show on the 30th at the Make-Out Room.
On Saturday night, Old 97's frontman Rhett Miller plays solo at Swedish Hall with Gran Bel Fisher. On Sunday, check out the Stars-esque male/female vocals of Great Northern at Cafe Du Nord with Division Day and The Changes. As we mentioned last week, Elliott Brood is at The Make-Out Room.

On Monday Metric's frontmistress Emily Haines plays with her solo backing band the Soft Skeleton at Great American with openers Tall Firs. This is a seated show, and if it's anything like the show she played last fall at Cafe Du Nord, expect some cool film clip projections and a slow broody move through the dark songs from her solo record Knives Don't Have Your Back. Definitely do not expect the manic movement and dynamics of your typical Metric show. Pidgeon describe themselves as a Pixies-Motorhead-Cardigans combo and you can verify that at Cafe Du Nord on Tuesday night.
On Wednesday night, the Rickshaw Stop's 3rd Anniversary Festival kicks off with singer-songwriter night featuring Etienne de Rocher, Bart Davenport, Helene Renaut and Bramble & Briar.
