Mmm...Junk Food....

lldoris.gifFor years the San Francisco school district has tried to get a healthy foods initiatives into the local schools. They finally did. But now it's looking like all that is going to waste as clever little vendors have been setting up shop right next to the schools and selling junk food there. Guess what the kids are preferring.

We kind of imagine this thing being like what happens when you go on Haight Street but instead of people going up to you and saying "buds...doses" you hear "Doritos...cokes...."

The trucks sell the usual assortment of junk food, all of which was recently banned, stuff like candy bars and cokes. Supposedly, the first day a healthy breakfast was introduced, a catering truck showed up at 7:30, just in time for all those students to be thinking about their yummy breakfast meal.

To fight the good fight, Sean Elsbernd is proposing legislation that would mandate that trucks have to be at least 1000 feet away from the school. Unfortunately, the district also has an open campus policy so even if the kids were served veggie organic burritos for lunch, they could still go to Mickey D's for some Chicken McNuggets with fries.
