MLK Day in S.F.: A Day On, Not A Day Off

Speaker Nancy Pelosi shows off her new gavel at the Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. Community Breakfast in San Francisco this morning.
This was Pelosi's first time back in her home district after ascending to the speaker position -- and she was greeted as a liberator by an enthusiastic crowd of 1000 as she warned Bush that the Democrats would be watching him closely on the proposed troop "surge" in Iraq.
On the issue of "San Francisco values," Pelosi said she was "proud to represent San Francisco values in the Congress of the United States -- faith, hope and love." Huge applause line! Yay San Francisco!
You can listen to the speech here -- and SFist Jim has a few more shots of other politicos after the jump.

Willie Brown with the becrutched Republican Arnold Schwarzenegger. Schwarzenegger didn't talk about the war at all, even though on the political talk show circuit this weekend, he'd come out in favor of troop increases. Nevertheless, he received a standing ovation from the crowd, amid some cries of "Stop the War!" Willie Brown, for his part, gave a shoutout to Pelosi's mentor Phil Burton and said "she comes from a great gene pool."

Nancy Pelosi with Millard Larkin II. That's an awesome name.
