When The Lights Go Down In The City
We visited The Homestead for the first time last summer and it instantly fell in love with the relaxed ambiance, gilded decor and fantastic jukebox. We'd never seen a DJ in there before, so when we saw one this past Monday we were a little worried. It didn't take long for Shellac Shack, a weekly 78 rpm listening party hosted by DJ Chas GaudÃ, to win us over. He plays blues, jazz, R & B, country and early rock n roll - all on twin Califone turntables. We don't even want to think of how long and hard he had to work to fill three boxes full of pristine scratch-free 78s. Catch him any Monday this month at the Homestead. Highly recommended.
This week's show recommendations:
Tonight catch three great singer songwriters when David Dondero, Matt Lutz (The Herms) and Tom Heyman take over Cafe Du Nord. Popscene presents a CD release party for Chow Nasty at 330 Ritch. On Friday, Trainwreck Riders play at Cafe Du Nord with Wires on Fire and Wildlife. You've seen their "Christmas Time Blues" video here on SFist and have probably seen them play with Two Gallants before, so support the boys at their headlining show. Tune in tomorrow for SFist Emily's interview with the band. At the Independent, the show with buzz bands Girl Talk and Matt & Kim is sold out, but you might be able to find some tickets on Craigslist. One of San Francisco's fantastic local labels, Six Degrees Records, is having an outernational dance party at Rickshaw Stop with Maga Bo and Lemonade. Head over to Annie's Social Club some time this weekend to wish Annie and company a happy one year anniversary since they moved to this new location.
Listen to: Girl Talk * Matt & Kim * Chow Nasty
Our pick for the best bill at the Hemlock Tavern this week (Pick o' the 'Lock?) falls on Saturday. Badgerlore, the duo of Ben Chasny from Six Organs of Admittance and Rob Fisk, pair up to get psychedelic, the Chapin Sisters (yes they are related to Harry) will play old school harmonizing folk and Dana Falconberry, vocalist of Peter & the Wolf, visits all the way from Austin to sing just a tiny bit like a young Shawn Colvin, in a totally good way. Watch Dana perform "Paper Sailboat":
Also on Saturday our friends at the Independent are excited to present a CD release party for Rupa & the April Fishes. They mix guitar, trumpet, accordian, cello and upright bass to make sounds from French chansons to tango, jazz and folk with some Indian ragas thrown in. For the show they've put together an Urban Circus with live painting by Mona Caron, guest bass player Marcus Shelby, stilt walkers and more. Read more about Rupa in this UCSF article. The 7th Annual "Sleepless Nights: Gram Parsons Tribute Concert" is going on at the Great American with Dave Gleason's Wasted Days, Mover (Reunion), and tons more artists. Over at Rickshaw MESH Magazine presents Gucci Time with live sets by Kirb & Chris and C.L.A.W.S. (featuring Jillian of Von Iva).
On Monday Cafe Du Nord opens its doors for a free show featuring local bands, so what have you got to lose? Check out Wooden Ships, Joseph Childress, Wymond and his Spirit Children, Garrett Pierce and DJ Brother Dylan. On Wednesday, Helmet plays Slim's with opener Totimoshi.
Elliott Brood was supposed to open for Johnny Cash's Legendary Tennessee Three this Tuesday at The Independent, but the show got rescheduled to June. Elliott Brood's playing the Make-Out Room on Sunday the 21st, so consider this video a preview.
