Political Junkie: Booooo!

It's a bad sign when the Oakland City Council (and its participating public -- see notes in the comments below) takes the "worst behaved political activity" award on a day where not only were Chris Daly and Gavin Newsom scheduled to be in the same room but there was also a Taiwanese political protest in town. (We didn't think anyone could outfight a Taiwanese politician!)

But no -- today's swearing in for new Oakland mayor Ron Dellums turned into the kind of three-ring circus we usually associate only with the SF Board of Supes -- booing, jeering, and pleading for order. Bring it on!

Picture from Novo Metro.

So (and forgive us for oversimplifying, Oakland residents) -- Ron Dellums ran as the progressive candidate, and Oakland City Council president Ignacio de la Fuente ran as the moderate. De la Fuente lost, 50%-36%.

As we mentioned previously, Dellums was to be publicly sworn into office yesterday (even though they had a private ceremony last Friday) at the Paramount Theater, and his supporters packed the hall. However, it wasn't mentioned that as part of the swearing in process, de la Fuente would also be renominated for city council president. Uh oh!

As de la Fuente was renominated, the crowd started to boo, and people in the audience started calling out that they should nominate someone else. Then controversial firebrand council member Desley Brooks nominated for president de la Fuente's erstwhile friend, council member Larry Reid. Cheers broke out in the crowd, but only two people voted for Reid (Brooks and Nancy Nadel). Nadel (who also ran for mayor, and got 13%) had also said she'd run for president, but no one nominated her. Sad!

The crowd then started jeering in earnest, and started booing Council member Pat Kernighan as she explained the reason for her support of de la Fuente.

The booing didn't stop until Dellums (who wasn't supposed to speak until later) got up and told people to cut it out. ""Oakland deserves more than shouting and name calling. Our problems are much too severe." He also said "Let them speak and be respectful," and that doing otherwise would lead to "madness and insanity and war."

Afterwards, de la Fuente declined to give the speech he was scheduled to give, and told the press that he felt racially attacked by the jeering, and that the whole thing had been disrespectful to Dellums. Reid, for his part, says he's not friends with de la Fuente anymore and that he had hoped de la Fuente would back him for president in exchange for Reid's support during the mayor's race. "I guess friendship with him is a one-way street," Reid grumbled. He also told the council, "You'll see a different Larry Reid.... Larry Reid has a new attitude."

And Nancy Nadel said she hoped the booing would demonstrate to de la Fuente that he needed to "do things differently." Seems like Nancy Nadel should have been focusing on finding one friend on the council to nominate her for president in the first place!
