Gavin on KQED
Thanks to a tipster, we got word that Gavin was going to be on KQED for an hour to answer questions, e-mails, and phone calls. So we dropped what we were doing (mainly watching "Charmed" on TNT) to give a listen in.
The Mayor was at his wonkish, earnest, puppy-dog best. To each question, he spent five minutes or so riffing off stats, programs, and pat responses so well that we could just picture him in the studio making all the "politician mannerisms" that you know he's spent hours in the mirror practicing. You know, like the thumb over clenched fist thing or the air karate chop. He was throwing so much stuff out that his voice was going out on him by the end of it.
After the jump, we give the highlights. Well, forty minutes of highlights as we missed the first fifteen minutes or so and then our reception cut out for another few minutes. Stupid hills
On the Police Department: What we have here is a failure to communicate, or more like Heather Fong has a failure to communicate. But he didn't hire her to be a smooth talker but to be the bestest Police Chief ever.
On his biggest weakness: It's his over-exuberance. As in, so eager to do things he often forgets the process. Also tends to use excessive exclamation points when writing e-mails which makes him look like a dork. No, we made that part up. But his point was mainly that he gets so frustrated with the process and with other people (read the Board of Supervisors) that he often rubs people the wrong way. He's working on it, though.
On what he thinks could be better about city politics: That we need to "move away from silos" meaning that while he likes district elections (he owes a lot to them), he thinks people need to look at the big picture more. And people need to be nicer to each other. He couldn't help but mention that he's been to a lot of inauguration and swearing in type things lately and the only group of people who didn't make nice during them was the Board of Supervisors.
On the perception that the city isn't good for businesses: We love business! Then got into a list of all the new businesses that are moving/have moved into the city and all sorts of things to help small businesses. We can't say what they are as we tuned out this part out of boredom.
On city bureaucracy: Things still take too darn long but he's working on it. Mentioned that for the first time ever, city managers have to take performance reviews. Then, told everyone that 311 thing won't be a joke.
On MUNI: Had to raise fares because of a huge budget cut but that the Transit Effectiveness Project will be brought into play within a year and that it's the first time some sort of system-wide review has ever been done. In other words, things will get better.
On people expecting too much from government on too little: He said that tax increases keep on getting voted down, so what are you gonna do about it? Then said it's up to everyone to show people that the Government is being more efficient and not wasting money because part of the reason people keep on voting against taxes is because everyone just assumes there's waste everywhere.
On the 49ers: Doesn't want them to move and if they do, they could kiss the title "San Francisco" goodbye. Also said he didn't drop the ball, more like a pen. Or a tiny, tiny ball. But no matter what happens, he won't neglect the people in Bayview who were supposed to be helped out by the new stadium/development thing.
On homelessness: Says things are getting better but that San Francisco "isn't an island," meaning basically there's only so much we could do if the state and federal government aren't doing anything to help. Also mentioned that unlike a lot of cities, most of the services for the homeless are in heavily trafficked areas (like the Powell Street turnaround or by the hotels) so that it often appears that the situation is worse than it really is.
On Community Development: We missed this one as we had to go to the bathroom
Well, that's basically it. If he talked about boozing it up, his favorite color of ties, or his dating life, we missed it. Sorry
