Let's All Go to the Movies

2679_1310831876a.jpgThis, the first week after the holidays, is traditionally where Hollywood dumps all the crappy flicks that weren't good enough to release during the holidays. So any movie opening this week has to be viewed with suspicion.

Up first is some movie that's being advertised a lot and can't be any good because if it was as good as they make it out to be, it would have been released weeks ago. And that is Freedom Writers, a movie about a white teacher who goes to some school in the ghetto and help them rise out of their situations. As we all know, according to Hollywood, black people teach white people how to be funky and white people teach black people how to get out of the ghetto. Except, of course, Morgan Freeman whose main role is to give saintly advice to everyone. We wonder if one day there will be a movie about a black teacher who goes to like some place in West Virginia to teach poor white people to rise out of their situation but we doubt that movie would ever be made. And if it did, it would probably star Morgan Freeman.

Also out this week is Miss Potter which sadly has nothing to do with Harry. It's yet another biopic of a famous writer who overcame some sort of something. SFist awaits the first biopic of a blogger as we watch them struggle to determine just when is the right time to get out of their pajamas. There's also Perfume about some sort of serial killer in 18th century France. This movie's gotten some good reviews and looks kind of cool if you like your period pieces to involve gruesome psycho-killers.

There's also the animated Happily N'Ever After which looks a bit like Shrek and features the vocal talents of Buffy herself and Code Name: The Cleaner starring Cedric the Entertainer which will probably be the top grossing movie of the week and make everyone bash people for seeing only dumb movies. We do have to say that the movie's web site is pretty funny, though.

I read the book Freedom Writers is based on. It's actually a pretty amazing - and true - story about high school kids in Central L.A. I remember crying with pride at the end of the book. But then again, we all know what happens when you bring a great book to the big screen.... the movie never does it justice.
