When The Lights Go Down In The City

Happy New Year everyone!

What We Did On Our Christmas VacationJeff socks
After having our plans to fly to Denver thwarted by a sinister snowstorm, we headed straight to Texas. We spent most of the time in Houston with our family and managed to type out our top 10 albums of '06 while our nephews watched "Pirates of the Carribbean" for the nth time. One night was spent in Austin with one of our favorite people Jeff Klein and his buddies. We helped Jeff pack for his rock tour with the Twilight Singers ("check out their appearance on Jimmy Kimmel last night) by folding lots of black clothing and snapping this moment of sock euphoria. Our new friend Chris, of Mineral and The Gloria Record, gave us a copy of an EP from his latest project Zookeeper and we're really digging it. While we were away on vacation, SFist Jon even posted the video for "When The Lights Go Down In The City", our namesake song.

Now we're back and bringing you our recommended shows for this week. Tonight if you're itching for something really out of the ordinary, head to 12 Galaxies for The Zoopy Show featuring Speed Levitch (remember him?). It's like Dr. Teeth's band backing the Suicide Girls with some bad trippy music. Popscene presents Scottish sensations and NME darlings The View at 330 Ritch. We're not hearing a whole lot that's new here, but you can't go wrong with four young floppy-haired dudes with Scottish accents.

Young OffendersOn Friday, check out a roster of all-star locals at 12 Galaxies for a tribute to Townes Van Zandt. Performers include Court and Spark, Alela Diane, Jeffrey Luck Lucas, Tom Heyman and more. Over at Bimbo's, Stephen Malkmus & The Jicks perform with St. Vincent. Cafe Du Nord presents Rykarda Parasol, Elephone, French Disco and Dora Flood. And at Annie's Social Club you can hear Teenage Harlets, This Is My Fist, Ashtray and Young Offenders. Return to 12 Galaxies on Saturday to hear local musicians on the turntables, with DJ Kelley Stoltz, DJ Greg Ashley (Gris Gris) and more.

On our plane rides to Texas and back, the in-flight movie was "Little Miss Sunshine" and we didn't watch it either time. Now it's the featured selection at the Independent's Cinema Drafthouse on Monday night. Is the universe trying to tell us something? Also on Monday, cheer for Honeycut when they open for Lady Sovereign at Mezzanine.
