Day Around the Bay

ba_protest0072df.jpg-There were 85 homicides in San Francisco in 2006 which, believe it or not, is an 11% drop from last year. It's also against the trend elsewhere.

-Three people were killed in a shooting in the Bayview district Friday night. A fourth is still in critical condition

-San Brunco police blow up pipe bomb in home of suspected marijuana grower.

-Some local tree huggers decide not to buy anything new for a whole year. Good luck with that.

-MTA will vote on ways to "calm" traffic in neighborhoods throughout the city. Chamomile tea, relaxation tapes proposed.

-SF Film industry not doing so well.

"Some local tree huggers decide not to buy anything new for a whole year. Good luck with that."

Except the article does say they will buy "new food, essential toiletries like toothpaste and shampoo, and underwear and other purchases that fell under the categories of health and safety."

And everything else they buy will be second-hand, which will be easy enough in this city...

The article is also dated last year. The Chron ran a follow-up story recently, saying that all Compact members did quite well and some are continuing:

I really like the idea of not buying new stuff. I found the "good luck with that" comment to be just a tad snotty as well. I wonder if they allow themselves to eat out at restaurants - didn't say anything about it...

The 2006 in the first sentence did seem kind of odd, for some reason!

That's great that they're doing it again and that it's grown nationwide. I think San Francisco residents already practice the "reduce/reuse" concept much more than people elsewhere.
