Who Wants To Be The Mayor (Maybe)

%7BC1BF7B98-74DE-4083-8FFA-76508EE52D33%7D_Web.jpgOkay, so we've covered the people who aren't running against Gavin Newsom for mayor in 2007, and we've covered the people who are. Who next but the undeclareds? Here's your list of the people that are being openly speculated about for a run (and thank you, Jackson, for reminding us to cover this!)

Carole Migden: Well, this is a complicated story. You may need to draw diagrams. So Carole Migden is currently the state senator for San Francisco. Mark Leno is currently the state assembly member for San Francisco. Migden and Leno used to be pals but now Leno no longer speaks to her because she endorsed his opponent Harry Britt for Assembly back in 2002.So Mark Leno is openly speculating about running for Migden's seat in 2008 (when he'll be termed out).

After Migden summarily dismissed those rumors (calling Leno "a little bit nutty" and saying "he's out of a job, what else is he going to do"), there's now counter-rumors that Migden is thinking about running for SF mayor. There's a number of theories behind this thinking: either Migden wants a backup job, Migden wants to up her profile among progressives (who will be a key part of Leno's State Senate strategy), or -- hey, maybe she just really wants the job. Who knows? Well, we're looking forward to our favorite frizzy-haired loose cannon pushing the wrong buttons around here!

Tony Hall: Okay, there's only two people in this "possibly speculating about a run" category, and former supervisor Tony Hall's the other one. Here's today's money quote: "The guy's [Newsom] got all the money and the media on his side, but I don’t think he has any integrity."

And as Sasha at Left in SF points out, we probably won't be able to support a parachute-in-at-the-last-minute campaign this time around, unlike before, because we won't have a runoff election for that last minute person to gain momentum. So would-be mayors, get those nomination papers (.pdf, and from the Nov. election) ready to go now!

White people with afros always crack me up.

I've heard Migden is really unpleasant, and this from people who like her.

People have been commenting on CM's hair and New York-style brashness for going on a decade or two, and yet all the voters do is elect and re-elect her, over and over, and by wide margins.

Has Mark gotten legislation passed the way CM has? She has a long record.

Excuse me, but it's called a "Jewfro".

And almost every good Jewish boy or girl has had one at least once in their lives. Why, I bet even Jon had one!

The best Jewfro ever was Barbra Streisand's in A Star Is Born. If you haven't seen this movie, you really ought to be ashamed of yourself.

She is total ego-maniac...her own staff doesn't even like her.

She kind of looks like Phil Spector in that picture. Or a Chiapet. And yes, Kevin, I was rocking the Jewfro even just a few days (or primordial Jewfro, actually) but got it cut.

A week or two ago, I got a call from a market research firm asking me to compare and contrast Mark Leno and Migden as mayoral candidates, so I'm guessing you're right and she's thinking of running.

What is this, a vote for sorority treasurer or District 3? CM's staff doesn't decide the issue. The people of the Bay Area put her in office, the people of the bay area will put her back into office in 2008.

CM will mop the floor with Mark and all other challengers. Ya heard it hear first.

Very anonymous = Huge Nerd

Hey, the size of my nerd is personal, private business. I'll have you know I get many compliments on its pleasing shape.

It's not that Mark is a bad person, it's just that he has nothing else to do and nothing to lose, so why not pay the $900 or whatever and hope for the best.

The press he's getting about him "comfortably upset[ting]" CM is oxymoronic and highly premature at best.

And his big beef is that she doesn't live in the district? Where does she live then? Sacramento? Is that what he means?
