Sad News In The -Ist Family
Even though we haven't met a lot of the editors in the -istaverse in person, we send enough emails around here that you feel like you've got friends all over the country and the world when you're on the Gothamist Editors distribution list.
So we were stunned to hear that always-hilarious Phillyist editor Star C. Foster died suddenly over the weekend. Star's emails always saw the lighter side of our server problems, spam attacks, and other editorial woes, and we always enjoyed reading her commentary in our inbox.
Star collapsed Sunday morning from a seizure and died of a pulmonary embolism on the way to the hospital. It turned out the pain in her foot that she'd mentioned in passing to some friends was from a tumor in her leg that had metastasized and spread to her heart. So horrible, and Star was only 33.
Star's family has set up a scholarship fund in her name. Our thoughts at SFist go out to Star's family and friends, and the grieving writers at Phillyist.
Star Foster, 1973-2006. After the jump, our former editor SFist Eve shares her memories of Phillyist Star.
I started reading Star's stuff when I was doing the week in -ist posts, because she had the kind of smart, funny, and snappy tone that I love. This summer, when the -ist server migration gave the sites a lot more downtime than any of us expected, she and I would email and IM back and forth on the theme of what we'd like to do to the server or (forgive us, technical team that I know was doing the best they could under impossible circumstances) those responsible. After a while, we branched out from server abuse to what we were doing that weekend, wedding planning (I got married in September), pets, the usual. Besides a shared hate of 500 errors, we had a lot in common. Once she asked me what it felt like to pet my (hairless) cat, and I told her that she had to come to SF to visit us and find out. I wish that she had.
