We Read The Weeklies
Last week's winner, the SF Weekly. Matt Smith tries to solve a murder from 2003. The Apologist on the new mall. Paper City folds. Cover article: discrimination against mothers in the workplace. The Brutal Sound Effects Festival -- sounds intriguing, doesn't it? Meredith Brody goes to Front Porch with Hiya Swanhuyser. Everyone seems to like Hiya at the Weekly! SFist Ced has nothing bad to say about the review, but is now taking bets on when Meredith will review "Out the Door" in the Westfield Mall. Frances Reade on an experimental feminist noise group. And a tribute to Dirk Dirksen, a stalwart of the local punk scene.
Next up, the Guardian: Everyone's talking about Steve Jones's five point plan to defeat Newsom's second term from both the right and the left (and rightly so! because it's fascinating!), but you should also check out this crazy story about a hate crime at the SFUSD crown jewel, Lowell High School, where it sounds like another teacher might have defaced an openly-gay language teacher's computer and the assistant principal might be covering it up! (The facts are murky.) An anonymous sex offender discusses the impact of Proposition 83 on his life. Cover: a holiday guide. L.E. Leone has mother issues. And Barry Bonds's horoscope: Do not participate in drama, Barry!
After the jump -- the Metro and the East Bay Express, along with the Weekly of the Week!
The Metro: Gary Singh urges you to attend a benefit concerts for health care for notorious DJ Dennis Erectus. Cover article: a book excerpt about the San Jose Mercury News reporter who ended up destroying his career after erroneously reporting that the CIA imported crack to LA. Why is the food at the San Jose airport so bad? When SFO looks good by comparison -- that's bad. And the Tom Waits three disc set.
And the East Bay Express: Bottom Feeder reports that the alarm system for the Berkeley City College is screwed up. A profile of the man who runs the thoroughly detailed web page ThomasPynchon.com. Cover article: Naked pictures of women (the "unadorned truth" kind). Pho in San Pablo. I Like Eating gets sushi in El Cerrito. A month of hip-hop to revitalize downtown Oakland. The Mr. T Experience guy reads from his young adult novel. And the Joanna Newsom album is too much.
Weekly of the Week: Possible teacher-on-teacher crime, plus shenanigans in the high school foreign languages department? The Steve Jones article where everyone piles on Newsom is just icing on the cake! (and fodder for our next Who's Attacking Newsom Now! column, as soon as we find the appropriately excellent picture of Gavin to use.) The Guardian takes it. (Though we wanna go out with Hiya Swanhuyser and Frances Reade some time soon! They seem super nice. We'd invite Meredith too, but we don't think Meredith would want to go out with us.)
