Yes. Extremely bad taste. I was afraid I was the only person in America who would think so.
I live in Vail, Colorado and I will tell you the Rocky Mountains are even more unforgiving. It's single digits at night, snow avalanches, etc. etc. But, he's just jumping on a publicity stunt brought about by the tragedy of this family. Very poor taste.
