SFist Tonight

Like us, you may have been inundated over the holiday weekend with stories of relatives' vacations and medical maladies or the accomplishments of the person sitting next to you on the plane's prodigious offspring.

Tonight, we are looking forward to more interesting narratives:

At Femina Potens, (465 South Van Ness @ 16th St) Sarah-Katherine Lewis reads from Indecent: How I Fake It and Make It as a Girl for Hire, a sex-worker memoir. Lewis neither condemns nor condones the work, though she depicts her experiences with a gallows humor that reveals the toll taken by sex work on its practitioners. This reading and reception is a benefit for St. James Infirmary, providers of free, compassionate, comprehensive health care for sex workers and their partners. (6-8pm)

How about a movie? The Castro screens The Face of Another by Japanese director, Hiroshi Teshigahara. Made in 1966, The Face of Another is a serious art film that follows the popular B-movie narrative of man disfigured in accident, is operated on by eccentric scientist, social and emotional trauma follow. One can see this as a precursor to Tetsuo: Iron Man. (7pm & 9:30pm)

In the East Bay, Black Oak Books (1491 Shattuck Ave.@ Vine, near Downtown Berkeley BART) presents Daniel Levitin discussing his new book This Is Your Brain On Music: The Science of an Obsession. How does the brain process music? How does music effect our moods? He explains the reasons why we seem to form our basic musical tastes in our youth, and the major role memory plays in our musical experience. Personally, we hope to discover why "The Girl from Ipanema" drives us into a violent rage. (7:30 pm)
