Between the rain and the holiday, accidents were up this weekend. Way up. The total this weekend, in fact, was over ninety accidents. That's a lot of accidents. Luckily, most of them weren't very major and there were no deaths reported on the highways (there was a death, however in Palo Alto, but that was mainly a case of Driving While Old). Most of them were like this one in Marin in which a couple of cars collided and then some cars collided into those cars.
Being from the East Coast originally, we've always felt that Californians were lousy at driving in the rain mainly because everyone treats it like it's no big deal and drives the way they normally would. Meaning just as fast and with just as much tail gaiting. Thus accidents and scary moments on the roads. We have heard, however, from other people who say the opposite, that people in California are great drivers in the rain precisely because they treat it like it's no big deal.
So maybe we don't know what we're talking about. Or maybe we do.

People who complain about Californians' bad driving habits never address this critical point: most people who live in California aren't actually natives.
That's right, the guy who's driving like an absolute buffoon in the rain probably grew up in Peoria and graduated from Carbondale before moving out here to chase the dotcom dream.
Anyone who has lived here for a couple of years seems to lose whatever rain/snow driving skills they acquired elsewhere. These are, of course, the same people who fly back for Christmas in Wisconsin and realize that they forgot to pack anything heavier than a light parka. :)
