When The Lights Go Down In The City

Lou Lou, sans Guitarfish
This week we give thanks for the amazing music coming out of the bay area, and the best venues in the nation to see it in. Listen up to the local music you can hear this week, and let's show our appreciation to these hardworking musicians by heading out to catch some shows.

The May FireOn Friday, Love X Nowhere are at Hemlock with Rondo Brothers. On Saturday night, one of our favorite local labels Birdman Records celebrates with a holiday showcase featuring Greg Ashley (Gris Gris), Lou Lou & The Guitar Fish and perhaps some surprise guests at 12 Galaxies. On Tuesday there's a benefit for Pirate Cat Radio at The Makeout Room with Lisa Dewey, Bettie Black and a band we're really wanting to catch live, The May Fire.

On Wednesday, the locals in Built For The Sea celebrate a CD release party at Rickshaw Stop with Audrye Sessions (a band both easy on the eyes and ears) and Push To Talk. Listen to Built For The Sea's mellow ethereal music with rich, charming female lead vocals and watch Audrye Sessions' video for "Paper Faces" below.

There are some touring acts you might want to catch too. On Sunday, you can spend an evening with Cat Power & The Memphis Rhythm Band at the Fillmore. Actually you can spend that evening twice because there's an early and a late show. And we just have to ask -- what's this about Alice in Chains at the Warfield? Even after reading up on this new version of the band, we're still creeped out. Our recommendation for Sunday night is to be at Cafe Du Nord to see the horribly-named but wonderful-sounding Margot & The Nuclear So and Sos along with Dirty on Purpose. OK we make fun of Margot...'s name, but we have to give it to them -- they're certainly easier to find on the internet than, say, The Like or The Knife.
