We Read The Weeklies
Last week's winner, the Bay Guardian. Tim Redmond didn't like being in jail (congrats on your Society of Professional Journalism award, Tim!). As expected, the Guardian came out against those PG&E grass sofas. Also, the Guardian decides that the enemy of their enemy (the SFPOA, Bevan Dufty) is their friend, so they're now backing Police Chief Heather Fong. However, they also ask: who should replace her? Annalee Newitz is pretty happy. Sonic Reducer on French language indie rock. Cover article: hip-hop in the Fillmore. Paul Reidinger got decent food on Aloha Airlines. And Frank Chu's horoscope: "Get off the ride and try to calm down."
Next up, the San Jose Metro: A good-natured letter from San Jose city council member Sam Liccardo being a good sport about being compared to the 40 year old virgin. Sunshine laws in San Jose. They want more swimming pools in San Jose. And the City of San Jose is sued in small claims court. Cover article: James Bond. Persian food in Campbell. South Bay rockabilly. And Straight Dope: why was it an apple in the Garden of Eden?
After the jump -- the SF Weekly, the East Bay Express, and the Weekly of the Week!
The SF Weekly: Matt Smith says that Phil Bronstein's asked a Two Cents reader contributor to provide feedback about the paper to them. Matt then compares the feedback the Chron gets to the feedback the Weekly gets, in the form of crank letters. Hey, what about We Read The Weeklies' feedback?? Do we have to print these posts out and mail them to you to get included, Mr. Smith? Fun fake headlines for the Examiner! ("Oh Dear God! Dungeness Crabs Are Coming!" is pretty funny.) Cover article: The decline and fall of Kevin Shelley crony Julie Lee -- her side of the story. You know we're morbidly obsessed with Julie Lee and her rapper son Andrew! So good. You know, when they put the DVD reviews next to the video game reviews, we thought a new Ali G video game had come out. The restaurant next to the Tadich Grill is pretty good. Holiday Gift Guide. Local MySpace recommendations. And a politics-free Savage Love.
And finally, the East Bay Express: Political punk rocker and pollworker Jesse (Townley) Luscious was accidentally registered as "deceased" by the Alameda County Registrar. There's a wikipedia war going on about Alameda city politics. Hey, remember that guy they profiled a month or so ago who went to Iraq and his feet swelled up (among other more serious outrages)? Well, he's kind of gone off the deep end. A new "upscale" hip-hop club is set to open at 17th and Telegraph. Cover: a holiday gift guide. Is this a Village Voice LLC-wide thing? We are kind of intrigued by Rachel Swan's music suggestions, though. [there appear to be no links for the Holiday Gift Guide on their site, though they do provide a convenient summary of it on their blog.]
Weekly of the Week: We love us our Julie Lee! The SF Weekly it is. The hip-hop scene in the Fillmore made the Guardian a close runner-up, though.
