Let's All Go to the Movies

tend.jpgYep, it's holiday time and that makes it a great time to go to the movies. After all, by Friday the family has pretty much run out of things to talk about so seeing movies is a way for the family to do stuff together without ever talking.

So what's opening this week?

First up is a movie about Bobby Kennedy called Bobby, a movie sure to warm the warm cockles of a Boomer's heart. As for us Gen-X'ers and Gen Y-ers, the only thing we really know about him was that he was killed by somebody driven crazy by having the same first and last name and he nailed Marilyn Monroe. For whatever reason, this movie has a pretty good cast and it's getting a lot of press even though it's directed by Emilio Estevez. THAT Emilio Estevez. We really wonder if Anthony Hopkins said to his agent before agreeing to star in it, "well, if it's directed by the guy who directed Men At Work I gotta be in it." Estevez did a movie about the Mitchell Brothers that was great in a so-bad-it's-funny kind of way mainly because he went all auteur like and used every cinematic cliché possible. And not well.

Next up is Denzel Washington in Deja Vu, a movie in which the Chron describes as being about "an ATF agent who's experiencing a sense of deja vu." Thanks guys. And speaking of weird concepts, the long awaited Darren Aronofsky flick, The Fountain is finally opening. The movie is supposedly about Hugh Jackman searching for immortality and doing some time traveling in order to save SFist girlfriend Rachel Weisz. The movie got a lot of hype early on but the hype died down probably because the plot sounds a bit incomprehensible and Aronofsky's movies are not the easiest to watch. As long as it doesn't have any scenes involving amputation or double-dildos, it should be interesting to check out.

And yes, the Tenacious D movie, Pick of Destiny, opens this week but you know that. In all honesty, we never quite thought the D was that funny. Oh, we thought the concept of them was funny but we never found them funny.

Finally, the Pedro Almodovar flick Volver also opens this week and we can't say we've seen any of his movies. A lot of people are pretty excited about this movie and it's getting excellent reviews so there you have it.

WTF? The person doing your movie write-ups has NEVER seen an Almodovar film?????? Who are you guys hiring, middle school kids?

What are you going to do next to lose all credibility with me? Hell, my boyfriend *hates* movies and *he's* seen a few of Pedro's films. Volver should have been your "first up" film.

I agree with above comments. How can you even talk about movies without seeing one of Almodovar's films? And you just missed the retrospective at the Castro.

Hey what's wrong with amputations and double dildos?

I third the comments so far - if you haven't ever seen an Almodovar film then you have no business reviewing films. Women on the Verge of a Nervous Breakdown; Tie Me Up, Tie Me Down; Talk to Her; Bad Education; All About My Mother; Law of Desire - how can you have not seen at least ONE of his movies!?!??!?!

I guess that's the problem with 'we'. I'm sure many SFists have seen Almodovar's fine films. He's one of my faves and I can't f-ing wait to see this one!!

On the up side, there hasn't been a single sports story today. Hurrah!
