First, the swanky:
The MoAD Vanguard presents Preview at the Clift Hotel, (495 Geary St. at Jones) an evening of art, music and dance for a cause - the cause being MoAD and the arts of the African Diaspora. From the PR: groove to the global sounds of DJ Cecil (Relevant Sound, Bembe) while taking in the artwork of Amanda Williams, April Banks, Rah Crawford, Rosalind McGary, Emmanuel Pratt and Sydney James. Preview is sponsored by Giant Step Records and ToDo Monthly. (6-9pm)
Then the free:
The SFSU Art Gallery (SFSU Campus, Cesar Chavez Student Center, Terrace Level) hosts the reception for Who is an Outsider? an exhibition and public media campaign that explores and addresses notions of outsider art through the perspectives of artists with disabilities and community-based artists. You may have seen the billboards around San Francisco, or even the posters on BART. Curated by Jaime Schwartz, Who is an Outsider? is a public art partnership funded by the Creative Work Fund, between Julio Cesar Morales and Creative Growth artists David Alvarez, Kimberly Clark, William Scott, and Gerone Spurill. (5-8pm)
And speaking of outsiders:
Roky Erickson's song, You Don’t Love Me Yet is the basis for Swedish artist Johanna Billing's project in which she invites musicians from various locales to spontaneously create and play an original interpretation of the song. Erickson was the force behind Texas psych-rock band, the 13th Floor Elevators, which experienced a revival in popularity back in 1990 with the album of Erickson/Elevators covers by popular bands, "Where the Pyramid Meets the Eye." (You Don't Love Me Yet was covered by Bongwater on said album.) Tonight at The Lab (2948 16th Street @ Capp) is a live performance by local musicians of the song in question, organized by Lab board member and Mission Creek honcho, Jeff Ray, featuring Barn Owl, Bart Davenport, The Court and Spark, Kelley Stoltz, Willow Willow and many more. (7-10pm)
