District 4 RCV Breakdown

family.jpgWe had so much fun breaking down the RCV numbers in District 6, we thought we'd tackle District 4 next!

Congratulations, Ed Jew! He wasn't even considered a factor when the Chron covered the race, and now he's the first person in SF RCV history to come from behind (2nd place) to win the election in overtime.

So coming in after the election, the top four candidates were (in order): Ron Dudum, Ed Jew, Jaynry Mak, and Doug Chan. Doug Chan was the mayor's pick, Jaynry Mak worked for Fiona Ma (the current Supervisor and now Assembly rep), and Ron and Ed were considered the more conservative candidates. The question was whether the Chinese-American voters would vote in a bloc. So let's run the numbers and see!

Also, and this is not related to RCV -- check out this awesome Flickr picture from the Ed Jew campaign by Steve Portigal.

This is a picture of Doug Chan campaigning with Newsom. We're running it because we really like it.

Okay, here's your numbers, from the first RCV pass (which has updated totals from the 2:30 announced numbers).

RON DUDUM . . . . . . . . . . 4,752
ED JEW . . . . . . . . . . . 4,705
JAYNRY MAK . . . . . . . . . . 4,075
DOUG CHAN . . . . . . . . . . 2,984
DAVID FERGUSON. . . . . . . . . 1,325
HOUSTON ZHENG . . . . . . . . . 202
WRITE-IN. . . . . . . . . . . 0

Round 1:
Houston Zheng and David Ferguson both eliminated (probably because Houston Zheng's vote count standing alone wasn't high enough to eliminate anyone outright) -- 1527 votes.

Of Zheng/Ferguson's votes, Chan picked up: 164

Mak picked up: 404
Jew picked up: 234
Dudum picked up: 354.
Exhausted ballots: 371.

Round 2:
Doug Chan eliminated -- 2,984 votes plus the 164 he picked up from Zheng/Ferguson = 3,148.

Of Chan's votes, Mak picked up: 781.
Jew picked up: 950
Dudum picked up: 741.
Exhausted ballots: 676.
This is the round where Jew first takes the lead (5,889 to Dudum's 5,847)

Round 3:
Jaynry Mak eliminated -- 4,075 votes + 404 from Z/F + 781 from Chan = 5,260

Of Mak's votes, Jew picked up: 1781
Dudum picked up: 1199.
Jew then had over 50% of the vote and was thus called as the winner. Jew had 7,640 votes over Dudum's 7,046.

Oooh, where? I'd love to see their discussion of it. I don't see it anywhere on the current topics under discussion there. I see a percentage breakdown for Mak's votes but nothing about the raw numbers round by round.
