Hot Stuff: Food Blog Round Up

GFBTBPumpkinMuffins.jpgOur frequent fantasies and consumption of pumpkin bread (with or without cream cheese frosting; raisins are also optional) shows we like to explore the myriad ways of preparing and eating this vegetable. We know pumpkin eats are not necessarily for everyone, of course. Yet we are still thrilled when conversions occur. Gluten-Free By the Bay makes pumpkin muffins which edged GFBTB into this territory: "from an unbashed pumpkin hater to an ambivalent, tentative pumpkin eater." Baby steps can be the way to change, GFBTB, baby steps.

If there’s a chill in our bones because we are sometimes too cheap to turn on the heater , we are forced to think of ways for it to start “gettin’ hot in here,”
so we can take out all our soup spoons. Catherine at Albion Cooks has a tasty looking pumpkin soup that she calls traditional. It looks and reads like it’s warming, light, healthy, and vegetarian. Our only quibble is we wish she would specify what size (as in, how many ounces) can of pureed pumpkin to use.

Running around to look at kids of all ages in their costumes is a great way to warm up and take in Halloween. (But where’s the food?) Another way is to think of something scary. With that in mind, click over to Sean at Hedonia as he celebrates his Best Martha (Stewart) moment. Spooky, indeed! She is miffed (shocker!) on camera when some pint sized guests do not partake of her just perfect looking faux bloody punch.

On to a Martha moment from a Martha that we actually like. Martha (and Tejal) of 2 Tasty Ladies get to answer the question we’d love to hear whispered in our ears anytime: "Have you tried the foie gras hot dog?" On a NYC jaunt (Tejal lives there), they experience “high concept street food” that sounds interesting. Other 2 Tasty Ladies adventures include the gin 'haven" Pegu Club, with its huge, lovely ice cubes and eyedroppers of lemon, lime, syrup, and bitters on each table, is like a temple to the art and science of true mixology.” We’re thirsty already! Now this Martha is a woman after our own heart.

It’s all treats and no tricks for this next one. Table hopper intrigues us this week with tidbits on Kara’s Cupcakes (watch out, the site takes forever to upload but we agree, it’s a cutie) on Scott Street near Lombard. Cupcakes with organic ingredients? We feel hungry and comforted already.

Tablehopper’s newsbit on Regalito Rosticeria may mean that we will saddle up and try menu items like pavo (turkey) con papas, mashed black beans, and tamales. Yes, tryptophan makes us sleepy but we soldier on. Perhaps looking at Regalito (little present or gift) Rosticeria’s freshly painted building this week will help perk us up from this week's sugar and pumpkin highs and lows. The RR facade looks like a sparkling, clean, exciting welcome change for SFisters to enjoy.
