Oakland Not a Safe Place To Be

061305opdlogo.gifYou know how like every week some organization comes out with some listing and everyone dutifully reports it as if it's handed down by the Oracle itself? Well, one of those list type things came out and everyone is reporting the fact that Oakland just got ranked as the eighth most dangerous city in the U.S. (they're #3 in the A.P. poll). The rankings are based on not just murders and shootings but for such crimes as rape or burglary. The numbers are then compared to the national averages, et viola, a ranking. The ranking is done by Morgan Quitno Press and no; we have no idea who they are either.

California represents all over the study. The third most dangerous city is Compton and Richmond is eleventh. San Francisco, you know the city that's averaging almost a shooting every-other day came in at 101. This is out of 371 cities.

On the other side of the safe/dangerous divide is San Jose which won as the Safest Big City, beating out New York. New York?

That's why I'm not moving to Oakland just yet. I'll take the sirens and grit of the Mission.
