Food Blog Round-Up

We admit that we're not as diligent about our food consumption as we should be. Being raised as good Catholics, this causes us a judicious amount of guilt. (Which is different than merely feeling bad about eating bad food--after all, Jack in the Box has its own special way of punishing you. . .) We spent this weekend on a trade show floor in Las Vegas, eating candy from the booths and dinner at various restaurants and hotels around town. It was gratifying to know that rubber hotel chicken is rubber hotel chicken, even if it is served at the Venetian. When we came home this Sunday we were looking forward to making a healthy dinner of spaghetti squash and meatballs--but promptly took a four hour nap. Ten p.m. on a Sunday night is not the time to start cooking dinner, and past the time that any place is open--hence the guilt about our sloth. For penance, we're going to focus on that most famous of fall squashes, the pumpkin. True to its name, Hedonia has a drool-worthy post on pumpkin butter, while Simply Recipes has a much better way of making pumpkin seeds than merely toasting them on a cookie sheet. (The secret is the. . . well, we won't give it away.) Vegan Knitting has a great adaptation of Joy of Cooking's Pumpkin Bread recipe, taking it in obvious-from-the-blog-title directions. Lastly, check out Knife's Edge's carvings--we're totally jealous.

But there was more visting going on this week than our own travel. Turns out Mario Batali was in town, and a couple of our blog community rubbed elbows with the red-bearded one. Sam found herself buying some extra pork products based on Batali's badgering, while Joy learned the secret of Babbo reservations. No, she doesn't share it.

Lastly, this is our last food blog round-up. An opportunity at work has killed whatever free time we had left, and in order to take full advantage of it we we need to cut back on some extra-curriculars. So starting next week your Food Blog Round-Up will have a new correspondent, Mary Ladd. If you don't know her already, go check out some of her writing, and her own blog. We're big fans of hers, and she's a big fan of all of you, so we're sure you're you'll get on like gang-busters. In true Jacob fashion, though, we'll make our final links about artisanal cheese.

Pic is from 101 Recipes, and is Toasted Peanut Bread. We chose it because we the first few times we read the title we thought it said "Tossed Peanut Bread" and that's just funny. . .
