We Got an Earthquake Plan

fire5.gifJust in time to calm everyone down after the Hawaii earthquake, San Francisco officials released their plans for dealing with the next big earthquake. The plan is actually a "supplement" to the "all hazards" emergency operations plan and what kind of hazards are they expecting us to have to deal with? Is there something else we should know about? And do any of those plans involve giant lizard like creatures coming out of the ocean to stomp buildings?

The 100 page plus plan includes details on staging areas using big, wide open spaces such as AT&T Park, Candlestick Park, Pier 48 and Crissy Field. Also listed are possible shelter spots for up to 50,000 plans and things like security and emergency food packages. And even though they say it'll take up to three months to restore water to the city, they do have a way to make sure there'll be water for the fire hoses.

And here's the really gloomy news-- the report tried to guesstimate just how many people would die during a quake and according to the report, a magnitude 6.9 earthquake on the Hayward Fault would kill an estimated forty-one to one hundred and forty people in the city, but a 7.9 quake on the San Andrea Fault would result in the deaths of 658 to 1,489 people in the city.

Ouch.
