It's Got to Be the Morning After
49ers 19, Chargers 48-- We can't really confess to have been paying a lot of attention to this game but we noticed this weird thing during the first half of the game where every time we looked up, the Niners were either scoring a TD or making a big play or even getting a safety. Then we'd look up at the score and notice that they were getting throttled by the Chargers. The game was 35-19 at half time and was pretty much doing what they will with the 49ers, but still, the Niners always seemed to be doing something big. That disconnect extended to the post-Raiders post-game show on KNTV when Rajah Bell and an awful Jerry Rice (seriously, he sucks) talked about how good the Niners looked and called them the best 2-4 team in the NFL. They even had a quote from Alex Smith saying how this game shows they could play with anyone. Did anyone notice the score? It was a shellacking. Hello, people? Anyone? Actually, we do have to say that after watching a bunch of Niners games this season that Niners always seem to look good while being blown out. We have no idea what that means.
Raiders 3, Broncos 13-- In one respect, the Raiders should be kind of happy at their performance. Not only did they only lose by 10 but also they were in it late until a Lamont Jordan fumble sealed the deal for the Broncos (poor, poor Lamont Jordan-- a total class guy stuck in football hell), something that caused Lamont to try and eat his towel. The score is even more incredible when you factor in the fact that Friday's practice was supposedly so bad Jerry Porter got suspended afterwards. But this game is kind of the opposite of the 49ers game in that a really bad team played a close game and somehow looked awful while the Niners played a blow out and looked somewhat good in doing so. What do we mean? The Raiders committed thirteen penalties, four of them by the same player and committed three turnovers. That's not just bad football, it's dumb football. Most of those penalties were for false-starts, something that came as a result of dealing with the noise and craziness of the Broncos' stadium. Which is a good excuse except for the fact that the Raiders practiced for it and couldn't do anything about it. That seems to sum up this Raiders season, as they become the only team in the NFL to still be without a win. 0-16, baby!
