The SFist Guide To The State Propositions

voterinfoguidestate.jpgIt's that time of the season again! SFist proudly presents our poorly researched, semi-annual Guide to the Propositions (state). We'll post the San Francisco proposition guide as soon as we wade through that guidebook next

As always, post your thoughts, corrections, and challenges to our supposed neutrality in the comments. [As you may remember, we have a mandate of nonpartisanship from our publisher, which is why we're never supposed to take sides on anything.]

Okay! Let's get started! Our summaries after the jump. If you want more information generally, check out either the California Dept. of Elections or the California League of Women Voters. The election's November 7.

Proposition 1A: Earmark budget money for cars. Pro: Smooth roads! Con: Shouldn't we be using that money for education or something?

Proposition 1B: Bond money for cars. Pro: Retrofitted bridges! Con: Why do we keep issuing bonds?

Proposition 1C: Bonds for housing. Pro: Housing for people in need! Con: Why do we keep issuing bonds?

Proposition 1D: Bonds for public education. Pro: Support schools! Con: Why do we keep issuing bonds?

Proposition 1E: Bonds for flood preparation. Pro: Stronger levees! Con: Why do we keep issuing bonds?

Proposition 83: Harsher penalties for sex offenders. Pro: Do you want those monsters lurking near your children? Con: Do we really need to put GPS trackers on these already Megan-Listed sad sacks? (an actual provision.)

Proposition 84: Bonds for water quality. Pro: Clean water! Con: Why do we keep issuing bonds?

Proposition 85: Parental notification for teen abortions. Haven't we decided this one already? Pro: Kids, talk to your parents. Con: What if she were raped by her father?

Proposition 86: Cigarette tax. Pro: They're addicted, so they'll definitely pay it. Con: Doesn't a pack of cigarettes cost like $85 million dollars already?

Proposition 87: Oil company tax. Pro: Make oil companies pay to support alternative energy! Con: Your gas prices will probably go up.

Proposition 88: Raise property taxes for schools. Pro: The schools could use the money. Con: Those whiny schools always need money.

Proposition 89: Public financing of elections. Pro (also here): Level the playing field so someone other than a rich actor can be the governor. Con: Who's going to look out for your special interests?

Proposition 90: Eminent domain. Pro: Libertarians want to stop the government from taking your property! Con: This is possibly the worst-drafted law in the history of the world.

Doesn't Prop 90 also do away with rent control and make it easy for landlords to screw us over? Which is a huge "Con" for renters.

And part of Prop 83 says that convicted sex offenders have to live even farther from schools, making it impossible for them to legally live in urban areas where there can be easily monitored. Instead they have to go live in the central valley or wherever. That's a pretty big "Con".

Prop 90 was NOT poorly drafted. They want to use the dismay over the recent Supreme Court eminent domain decision to make it prohibitively expensive to enact any land use regulations. The eminent domain stuff is just a smokescreen.

As for Prop 83, I walked down Market Street with a pedometer and it counted over 4000 pedophiles. Forcing them into the 'burbs would be funny, but it would destroy the SF pedicab industry.

What exactly is the difference between 1E and 84? They both claim to put money towards flood prevention (levees) and protecting drinking water. And they're issuing like $9B in bonds between them. Yikes.
