We Read The Weeklies
Last week's winner, the SF Weekly. Josh Wolf's mom writes a letter, as does transgender activist Chris Daley and an angry rebutter to Hiya Swanhuyser 's article about a rural rock documentary. The Bouncer's article about Huey Lewis and the mentally disabled won an award and is included in the Best Music Writing of 2006 anthology. Congrats, Bouncer! Are you an Apologist for the Blue Angels? If you're SFist Jon, the answer is yes. Skater art in the basement of the Hall of Justice. Cover article: Did a local fisherman get killed in a hit and run boating accident in the Bay? Chris Daly, not the transgender activist, will be at the CELLspace 10th Anniversary party on Saturday. Meredith eats at the Westfield Food Court -- sorry, we meant "Emporium." SFist Ced is so disgusted by this, he refuses to review it. An awesome Shins fan at the Download Music Fest. Lily Allen says some crazy stuff, and Bing Ji Ling picks his favorite ice cream places. And Matt Gonzalez's horoscope: do whatever Rufus Wainwright does.
Next up, oh, let's say the Metro. San Jose hates tourism. Annalee helps map things. Why won't Mountain View do something to make Rengstorff's Caltrain intersection less dangerous? Lobbyists opposing Santa Clara's Prop A. Cover article: pot raids. Fancy food at Santana Row. The South Bay only got two stars total in the Michelin. Financial woes for the San Jose Rep Theatre. A club in downtown San Jose takes a risk on 18 and up events. And the Straight Dope: birth control plants in ancient Rome.
The Guardian and the EBX, after the jump, along with the Weekly of the Week!
The Guardian! Hmmm... so Don Fisher's enemy number one in the editorial pages, but you let the Gap buy out the entire magazine for their INSPI(RED) red anti-AIDS t-shirt ad campaign? (You may know this better as the MAYO(RED) campaign, as Gavin was wearing one of their shirts when he got his floppy locks photographed.) Reading this issue is like riding one of those wrapped BART cars, except it's not for Nexium the purple pill. Color us BO(RED). Or TI(RED). Okay, okay, moving on. Developing Treasure Island. East Bay endorsements. Cover article: barriers to access to abortion, even in California. This article was really good -- we're now SCA(RED) about Prop 85! Reidinger goes to Cafe Claude, and decries Michelin's close-mindedness. L.E.Leone goes on a date at Tartine. A local experimental film artist and a review of the movie American Hardcore. Will these RED ads ever end?
And finally, the East Bay Express. A fun cease and desist letter from attorney Kevin Kramer, asking the EBX not to refer to a generic exterminator as an "Orkin man"! Awesome. Ugly same-sex divorces, and entries from the UC Berkeley crime logs. Cover article: religious school defies local zoning rules in federal court. A crab cooking competition on Sunday at Spenger's! Brunch in Oakland and Berkeley. Mmm, beignets. The intellectual property wars over guitar tablatures. We hope Kevin Kramer has something to say about that too! And behind the scenes at a hyphy dance audition.
Weekly of the Week: You know, we might very well have given it to the Guardian if we hadn't been freaked out by all the GAP RED ads. We don't begrudge you the money in ad sales, Bruce B. -- not at all! -- but still, it kinda freaked us out. So it's going to the EBX instead. Kevin Kramer, you'll always be a generic exterminator not affiliated with ORKIN (tm) to us!

I think the Crabby Chef competition used to be on a Sunday. The reason they may have changed it to a Saturday is it is sometimes difficult to get chefs to come out on their day off. (I know of 2 chefs that were invited but didn't sign up for past Crabby Chef competitions for that reason). That said, it sounds like a fun event.
Hooray! Transgender activist Chris Daley RULES!
