SFist Tonight Wants Some Relief

Tenant Relief
Not to be confused with the popular hemhorroid remedy, Proposition H, if passed, would increase the amount of money landlords pay evicted tenants forced out by condo conversions, planned demolitions and everyone's favorite, the OMI (owner move-in, though OMI sounds like an abbreviation for something equally unpleasant and embarrassing as hemhorroids). Additional money would go to elderly and disabled tenants and tenants with children. Tonight, the Housing Rights Committee hosts an Evening of Art and Politics to Benefit Proposition H in their own backyard (427 S. Van Ness @ 15th St.). Silent auction of art works by some impressive names, speeches by the Supervisorial Power Trio (Mirkarimi, Ammiano, Daly), music and drinks. 6-8pm.
War Relief
Maxine Hong Kingston and veterans of several wars read tonight from the new anthology, Veterans of War, Veterans of Peace edited by Kingston at the Jewish Community Center in Berkeley.(1414 Walnut St.) This anthology, published by Koa Books, "is a harvest of creative, redemptive storytelling -- nonfiction, fiction, and poetry -- spanning five wars and written by 80 individuals profoundly affected by war." 7:30pm.
Evil Mad Scientist Relief
Boston's Devil Music Ensemble performs their original score to the 1920 silent film Dr. Jekyll & Mr. Hyde(the John Barrymore version) at the Balboa Theater (3630 Balboa @ 38th Ave.) tonight at 7:30pm. Compared to ensembles such as the Alloy Orchestra and Tin Hat Trio, the Devil Music Ensemble alights at Gary Meyer's independently-owned movie house.

Prop H is a great and important initiative, but won't go anywhere unless we all vote No on Prop. 90.
