SFist Reviews 9/11: Press for Truth

9%3A11truth.jpgFew things are more annoying than a government that touts a righteous altruism then acts in ways that brazenly contradict it, and then seeing the news media deliberately let them get away with it. When the world's sole superpower toys around with foreign nations as if they were little army men on a map, they must stymie their opposition with duplicity and mistruths, which is exactly what the Bush Administration has done.

We all know the anger of extremist Muslim fundamentalists, but what we don't know and what the White House keeps conveniently hidden from the American public is how we let them get so far one day in 2001. Five years later we are still only blindly piecing together how and why American government failed us so completely.

Making its way across the country is a new film by two young documentary filmmakers by the names of Ray Nowosielski and John Duffy, adeptly weaving together the political events leading up to and following the 9/11 attacks. Served up in a clear, presentable and extremely damning fashion, 9/11 Press for Truth details with well-documented accuracy that not only did the President and his staff know about the attacks beforehand, they in fact blatantly opted to do nothing about it when they were eminent. The film goes on to show the subsequent fleecing of the American people when they stood up to ask for answers.

Based on Paul Thompson's 2004 book: Terror Timeline: A Comprehensive Chronicle of the Road to 9/11--and America's Response, which connects the dots of over 5000 mainstream news reports linking up what the White House knew and when they knew it, Press for Truth picks up where Thompson left off, using video clips of paradoxical White House press statements, insider interviews and one very telling presidential bulletin made public in '04 that shows the harrowing dishonestly of the Bush presidency before and after September 11th, 2001.

The film goes on to ask the difficult question of why a government created for the people by the people would allow such events to come to pass. The question then gets answered with surprising even-handedness noting events from the 1979 Afghan-Soviet war, the US-backed training of the Taliban in that war and some shady business dealings with the Pakistani Secret Service agency known as the ISI which purportedly helps fund terrorist activities. We are also reminded that not only did we never capture Bin Laden but that we actually let him escape on several occasions.

Press for Truth is a frustrating testament to a government that acts with complete disregard to the best interests of its people, depicting an underhanded political landscape interested only in securing its agendas. This is an important film not only because it brings to light connections that have been intentionally concealed for one reason or another, but also because it dares to tell the truth in a time when even the definition of the word has been changed to suit the current political climate.
