SFist Has Something Nice to Say About MUNI-- Again
We had one of those crazy MUNI rider experiences on Saturday, on the 22 Fillmore (yes going to watch the Blue Angels). We had originally written a long, detailed post about everything that happened but then realized nobody wants to read long posts as everybody pretty much reads this at work anyways and doesn't have time to read long posts. So we'll try and be brief.
But anyways, to make a long story short, this guy gets on at Haight Street and tells the driver he's only going to go for a stop or two because he's just looking for somebody. The driver lets him on. It's pretty obvious that the guy who got on is a little on the crazy side, not homeless-crazy, but more like still-functioning-and-normal-looking-but-did-a-little-too-much-acid-in-the-60’s crazy.
He doesn’t get off at the next stop but as the bus pulls away, he starts yelling "back door! back door!", doing SFist MUNI Peeve #3, that being people who don't get up in enough time to leave and so rush through the back of the bus knocking everyone over and holding the bus up. It turns out the guy dropped his wallet while standing up and by the time he finally retrieved it, the bus started moving again. The driver, a big dude who previously stared down some kid who entered the back of the bus, tells him no, he won't stop because if he did, he'll get off schedule and be late.
This doesn't make the guy any happier and he starts whimpering about it being an emergency and all that and gets off at the next stop, still whining and muttering. As the bus begins to pull away, however, he gets in front of the bus and starts banging on the door, yelling to the bus driver to stop and give him his badge number so he could complain to the authorities.
A Mexican standoff ensues as the guy refuses to get out of the way and the driver can't get him to move out of the way. Finally, the guy backs off, mainly because someone on the bus starts yelling back at the guy in the street. We are on our way again.
Bashing MUNI drivers is easy. We've all had the bad MUNI driver experience. But we've also seen plenty of things to make us think the job would just plain suck. This was one of the thing's that would make the job just plain suck. The driver did everything he was supposed to do-- stay on schedule, follow the rules, make sure everyone paid-- and still had to put up with crap for it.
So to you, 22 Fillmore MUNI driver, we say good job and sorry about that.
The morale of this tale, however, is not about the suckiness of being a MUNI driver but about something else entirely. See, the driver was able to probably deal with all the crap because he was over 6 feet tall and well over 200 pounds. Nobody would really mess with him. So maybe that's something MUNI should consider to help things along, hire only really big drivers.
Mr. Ford?
