This is a must-do, everyone! Every October, ArtSpan produces SF Open Studios, the country’s largest, longest-running free visual arts event and a model for open studios throughout the country and the world. During the event, over 800 local, practicing and emerging local artists open their art studios throughout the city to showcase their work for the public. So put on your tennis shoes and hit the pavement, because this year is going to be incredible! (Hint: pick up the San Francisco Bay Guardian each Wed. for a map of the weekend's open studios)

Happy Beauty: Art by Mark Mothersbaugh
Opening reception: Oct. 7, 7-10 p.m.
You may know him as one-fifth of seminal band, DEVO, but did you know that Mark Mothersbaugh is also an artist? Mark's love of art started early in his childhood, just after it was discovered that he was extremely nearsighted and legally blind, something else you may not know.
His first correctional glasses offered Mark a new view of the world, inspiring his obsession with imagery and illustrations. During his downtime on early tours with DEVO, he began illustrating on postcards to send to his friends, which quickly became an obsessive habit. The cards were originally created as his personal diaries, and limited-edition prints are now on view along with MUTATOY, the prototype for a new line of toys designed by Mothersbaugh and collaborator Herminator.
